Bug experts seeking new name for destructive gypsy moths
By SETH BORENSTEIN, AP / 4:37 pm ET Fri Jul 09, 2021

Bug experts are dropping the common name of a destructive insect because it's considered an ethnic slur: the gypsy moth.

The Entomological Society of America, which oversees the common names of bugs, is getting rid of the common name of that critter and the lesser-known gypsy ant. The group this week announced that for the first time it changed a common name of an insect because it was offensive. In the past they’ve only reassigned names that weren’t scientifically accurate.

When will this crap finally reach it's breaking point.

Oh. Lewis and Clark statue also taken down.

Gypsies stole a pair of boots I left drying on the front porch.
(I guess they gave up snatching children... )

Were Gypsies actually complaining about this?

When?

When people just start refusing to go along with it.

It really is that simple.

Like the Salem Witch Trials, this stuff is completely out of hand.

What does this portend for Django Reinhardt, Jimi Hendrix and the BGKO?

And what about Black Widows and Brown Recluses? Shouldn't we just call them Spiders of Color?

Lady bugs? Cockroaches? Are we making assumptions?

Perhaps the Praying Mantis is merely meditating...

Black mamba?

Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves was originally titled Gypsys, Tramps and White Trash by writer Bob Stone.
It would probably be boycotted if released this year.

That didn't really hit home with me right away until I looked at it again and really saw that part.

NOBODY is officially "in charge of common names".......OF ANYTHING.

Sub, Hoagie or Grinder

Soda, Pop or Coke

Potato bug, pill bug or roly-poly

Gym shoes, tennis shoes, "tennies" or sneakers

Lightning bug or firefly

Shopping cart or buggy

chigger, red bug or harvest mite

I can't imagine the stupidity of anyone that believes that there is anyone is "in charge of common names" or the arrogance of anyone who thinks they are.
