Per-Mile Tax - It's In The Infrastructure Bill (Page 1/3)

And I don't like it. Not one bit. I live 50 miles from work. No public transport option. I have to pay gas tax, I understand that. But this will lead to government's desire to put a GPS tracker in your car. Yeah, no.

Sorry, it's covered in BHall71's thread.

The New America sucks. The New America leads to domestic tyranny, the tyranny that the Old America used to reserve for some foreign nations.

This is Not News to anyone that follows Fuel Tax AKA Road Tax...

Some US States already have Tested several methods for Tax per Mile. While could use GPS, You Do Not Need GPS to do this...
● State Dongle plugging into any 95 and later vehicle w/ ODB2 then "calls home" every X number of days w/ VIN and odo number.
● In States w/ Inspections, Many already use ODB2 for Emission Testing. Just save Mile Data at same and Bill you to Renew the Registration.
● They can force Tesla GM etc to provide Miles Driven to State and Feds for Road Tax. The State and/or Feds can then send a Road Tax bill once a month or whatever.

Why?
Because Full and Hybrid E-cars don't buy Fuel relative to Miles Driven.
How long did you think E-cars won't see Road Tax?

Other Countries already tested or have started collecting Odo numbers for same reason.

As Is, PA and others have Already raised Tolls because Covid Shutdown last year cause PA Turnpike, Bridges, etc, not generating $$.

As long as this is only for electric cars I am good.
But if they want to do this for gas cars then they need to stop taxing gas..

I don't think people are aware of how surveilled some of the public is already. Groups (gov and other) are surveilling by phone, phone position tracking and by OnStar already.

Well, Ol' Joe promised not to raise gas taxes. He kept his promise, didn't he?
sourmash AUG 11, 07:01 PM
If they replace one with the other, yeah. Ok.

And Not New either... For just roads...
Every Toll Plaza for Roads Bridges etc records All vehicles using them and been so for Decades. Not just new for Ezpass et al but Cash Token and other payment method since the 70-80 has video. Many Tolls took still pic on film for anyone failed to pay or otherwise trip alarm way before that.
Example: A few years ago one pickup in a road rage wreck got caught after viewing PA Turnpike Toll video.

Now cameras for this is cheaper and cheaper and making HD output too that "Traffic cameras" are very common. Only cameras that output to the public can't zoom to read a tag etc.

NYC and other US Cities want same $ grabbing Congestion and Pollution Fees as London UK has for years and recently covers more area.
Will Bill these Fees by Camera and "EZpass" transponders same as growing number of Toll Roads w/o Toll Staff like AC Expressway in NJ. Only a matter of time all Turnpikes and GSP and more are Non Cash Tolls only w/o Staff.
Oh... You don't have EZpass? Expect to Pay More to Mail you a Bill generated by video /w your Tag. That "service" currently cost $3 to $6 in many places on top of Tolls/Fees.

Twenty years ago, I could go on Oregon DOT's website and see a list of every time one of my trucks passed by a scale, including axle weights, even when the scales were closed. Ten years ago, USDOT was testing infrared devices that could tell if a truck had a brake out of adjustment as the truck drove by the sensors. I have been out of the business for over five years and I can only guess at what they can do now.
