I need to shoot holes in some steel things, from 100 yards (Page 1/5) |

Which is more likely to easily penetrate the bottoms of oxy and acetylene bottles from about 100 yards away?
Most of the oxy bottles are size M (200 cu ft) and the acetylene bottles are #4 and #5 (8.5" and 12" diameter) Contents of the bottles is/are unknown as most of the valves are frozen shut--they are all quite old. (There are a couple of old propane bottles in the mix as well but I'm pretty sure that I I think they are empty.)

The bottoms are real thick, and you may not be able to penetrate with out an ap round

Put some tannerite around the valves and shoot them from the top And NOT from directly behind). Lots easier to knock a valve off than cut through the bottom on those things. I've never shot one, but zip-wheeled more than a few.
BTW, Acetylene tanks are full of an asbestos insert so depending on your enviro laws it might be smarter to just hazmat them.

You would be better off recycling them. I would think any gas company would take them off your hands. Liquid gas can kill you if it gets on you, its cold enough to freeze things you don't want frozen. Have you put them on a scale?

I read a story about a guy that used some tannerite on a tree, a lot of it and was charged with creating a WMD so combining it with an acetylene bottle probably wouldn't be a good idea.[This message has been edited by Jake_Dragon (edited 08-15-2021).]

Too bad you don't have any trees. You could build a bon fire and have them bottles in the middle.
100 yards away might be safe.

I checked. Too far out of date for any of the local gas outfits to take them. The local metal recycler will not take them if they are not cut in 1/2 or full of holes. I do have a horizontal band saw but I'm not crazy about cutting into one that I'm not sure about it's contents.

Know anyone in EOD? Realizing you're in a rural area, access to a bomb squad? I'd think there would be much better sources of information than a car forum. I don't pretend to be any kind of authority on this and popping those valves off with a rifle could be interesting. I'm just not that good of a marksman any more. If you do this, please take and post video. I'm sure it'll be a hit..

Can you remove the valves? If yes, remove them, fill them with water and have a field day.
