Digital Signature And Unknown Publisher Issues (Page 1/2)
IMSA GT AUG 21, 05:48 PM
I have an issue that I need serious help with. Running Internet Explorer 11, I cannot download an ActiveX control item from a Flir product. Our systems use Windows 7 Embedded so I have no option but to use what is given to me. The item in question is a Flir video analytics unit and the manufacturer says that they are releasing a firmware upgrade to focus on the Microsoft Edge Browser. In speaking with them, they have no fix for the Internet Explorer issue so my question is.....how do I get around the "Unknown publisher" and "Digital signature" problem? I have to use the 32 bit Internet Explorer and I have gotten the ActiveX control to work on my personal laptop but not on the embedded platform. Is there a fix for this? I've disabled all internet security to where even the most simple task prompts me with a "are you sure" warning yet I still cannot get the control to install.

Just FYI:

I can't help, but I do have a question. If you are using Windows 7 Embedded, I assume this is some ICS system, which is non-internet connected (because you shouldn't have a Windows 7 machine on the internet unless it literally lives by whitelisting). Why then are you being required to upgrade your Flir product. Has it never worked before and you're just trying to get it to work now? Need more information than what you're probably willing to share here. I assume that what you're being asked to do is support a vendor who supports newer technology than your older embedded systems support. How did you end up with this combination that there isn't an alternative?

Also, didn't know if this was obvious or not... but a CAB file is basically just a zip file. You can't open it with the "built in" Windows ZIP... but if you download WinZip, you can open that file up, and then access the files inside of it that you need (drivers, etc.)... does that help?

So here's the issue, it's a device that we use throughout our sites to do video analytics when a person, vehicle, drone, or animal gets too close to the walls of our substations or gas yards. It is accessed through a browser on the same machine to setup the zones and analytics so you type the I.P address, it connects to the device and the device offers the ActiveX control which you have to install in order to log into it. It is not an ActiveX file that I can physically capture and install in standalone mode. It is only offered if you try to access the device. I've tried different operating modes of I.E from 7 all the way through 10 in developer mode with no luck. As I mentioned, the manufacturer has a firmware upgrade for this to work with Microsoft Edge but that is for Windows 10 and we would need to change out a few hundred machines to accomodate that.

Also, I have tried these devices on my home PC, multiple laptops with different version of Win 7 running and so far I've only been able to get the control to load on one of my personal laptops. The manufacturer is zero help so we may simply change manufacturers and go to a different product line.

No, the only browser that the manufacturer supports is I.E Explorer. If you attempt to use any other browser, it produces an error message stating that the activeX only works on I.E. My hands are literally tied here.

Win 7 embedded is actually a different beast and is still under support

Unfortunately i have not played with it. I only found this one post about active x in win7 embeded with ie11 https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/cac17006-7c6a-4247-8b80-61588d2789b6/activex-support-i n-windows-embedded-compact-7?forum=winembplatdev

Im sure you have seen it and its useless. I have some cameras that need an active x plugin but they work in newer versions of windows. (No no i know your embedded devices can't upgrade and thats useless too)

Sorry bud

But, you went to the effort to offer what you knew.

That is PFF!

Welcome to Remote Desktop Services

This is what I would do, just use the devices to log in to a published app running edge.
Its going to be cheaper than replacing all of the devices. You can even give the tires a kick for 90 days before you buy the licenses if you have an available server license.

I appreciate any info or help but in the end, I'll have to do something similar to what Jake posted. I can remote desktop to a computer that is 300 miles away and then access the product. It's just tough when we have one bottleneck site in the network and I have to hop through that crappy switch. Oh well, I appreciate everyones help on this matter.
