Thanks Jake. I had read another '1st hand' account of the 'incident' and it clearly stated the aircraft commander gained a lot of humility afterwards.

I was never on one that htt a tree and suffered damage but I can relate 1st hand what happens when one of the helos like on the right side of the top image taxis about 4' too close to one of the concrete arches in the 2nd image. Nowhere to hide or run to. You just stand there and takes what the blades throw at you. It was ugly and probably expensive..whatever a full set of blades, rotor hub, main gearbox and about a week of sheet metal airframe repair cost. And new skivies.

It does remind tho, of an old quote:
Breathes there the pilot with soul so dead who never to himself hath said,
"I bet I can fly under that bridge"?

(or between those trees.. )

Spent about two weeks prepping a UH60 for shipment back to Depot level maintenance due to a pilot thinking he had room to taxi that aircraft between a building and a telephone pole. The building was fine, the pole and aircraft, not so much. Ironically, the pilot was a Lt. Col and the battalion commander and his co-pilot was the Battalion Safety Officer/instructor pilot.
Oops.

The pilot that hit the wonder arch was a Marine Major and our squadron XO.

Yep, most of us thought we were really good until something proved we weren't. I can honestly say, I got lucky a few times and didn't screw the pooch. Luck is always a good thing to have on your side. That and a Guardian Angel. Thinking I probably went through a couple of them.

I've watched Bundeswehr pilots fly BO-105 anti-tank helos through a forest and to this day I have no idea how they didn't crash.
