'Bad Hair Day' at KATV Arkansas. White reporters donned Afro-style wigs on-air. (Page 1/2)

"Two TV reporters wore Afro-like wigs live on the air. They have been suspended and their boss fired."

quote
Heat waged a summer-long siege against Little Rock with average high temperatures topping 90 degrees in July. On Sept. 1, the city hit triple digits for the first time in more than three years. Officials opened cooling shelters and urged people to check on children and the elderly to make sure they didn’t get heat stroke or die.

Then, in the middle of September, an approaching cold front was poised to drive off the heat and drop temperatures into the 70s. Local television station KATV decided to celebrate with wordplay in a “return to the 70s” segment in which on-air personalities sported looks popular in the 1970s. They might have chosen bell-bottoms, tie-dye T-shirts or a peace symbol to pull off the gag.

Instead, the two White journalists wore Afro-like wigs.

The fallout was swift and severe, exposing the TV station’s ongoing struggle to combat racism. Sinclair Broadcast Group executives apologized for the “poor judgment” that led to the segment, fired the station’s longtime news director, Nick Genty, and indefinitely suspended Chris May and Barry Brandt, the anchor and meteorologist who wore the wigs. . . .

Rinse, welcome sane person. There are some menstruating persons posting today, so be careful.

A long time friend who is very clearly not African nor African America grows a perfect fro. So did another guy I worked with. Both have 1980s pics in leisure suits with the hair style displayed. One is a dead ringer for Disco Stu. From the Simpsons.

WTH?

I knew white people in HS who had hair *exactly like* that.

Crybabies.

I lived through the late 90s as a young adult male... when Disco was really popular (again)... and the Bee Gees were back at the top of the charts, and even had their Millennial concert (to commemorate the year 2000, not Millennials, haha). During that time, I would routinely go to night clubs where they literally played disco and people dressed up in 70s outfits. One of the more popular ones in South Florida was Polyseters. A lot of white people wore those wigs. It is certainly a hair style that is predominantly black, but there are as many, if not MORE people in the United States who are white that also had that hair. Most people of Eastern-European Jewish descent also have hair like that.

Since I know disco is totally uncool again, I'll just state that I grew up in the 80s and 90s, and used to listen to everything from Motley Crue to Metallica. In the 90s, we all wore stone-washed jeans with ripped knees, converse, and plaid shirts with a concert-T pulled over it (or underneath with the plaid shirt unbuttoned)... lol.

This is how we dressed in the '70s. No, we did not listen to disco.

If you can name the people in the pics that I posted above, you are probably a boomer and possibly a dangerous subversive insurrectionist. Neither is a boomer and both are dead.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery? Nope, it’s racist!

Millennials who know nothing of the 70's are getting offended by people who actually lived through the 70's

Yes, it would seem so.

Ironically, they see themselves as radicals in the style of the '60s all the while ragging on "boomers" for screwing things up. What will they do when they realize that one of the two frizzy haired guys I pictured above is Abbie Hoffman, who is largely responsible for the riots peaceful protests at the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention?
