Green sky at morning, get the fry pan warming. Green sky at night, squid dish delight (Page 1/2)

Breaded and fried, with lemon and red cocktail sauce? Spaghetti and squid? Wok'd or Hot Pot Calamari?

MATSU, Taiwan — As dusk falls, green lights appear one by one along the horizon off Matsu, a chain of Taiwanese islands near China's coast. Soon, an eerie, fluorescent glow fills the night sky. The lights, used by Chinese fishermen to attract squid, leave residents of Matsu feeling uneasy and surrounded.

“It’s so unnatural. It’s like being in a science-fiction film,” said Huang Kai-Yang, who works in youth development and ecotourism in Matsu.

On Facebook, residents shared photos and theories. “Suddenly many squid boats appeared. I felt like the whole island was under siege,” said Chang Liang-Wei, 58, a fisherman from Matsu’s Beigan island.

Almost every night for the past four months, dozens, often hundreds, of Chinese squid boats have plied the sea off Matsu near the invisible boundary known as the median line, an unofficial buffer between Taiwan and China. Mounted with green LED lights that envelop the islands, the flotilla represents the latest Chinese encroachment on Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own and has threatened to seize by force. Officials and residents say the lights threaten tourism and marine life, and are a reminder of their helplessness in the face of Chinese actions. . . .

To find squid prepared properly, is nearly impossible, but worth the quest. The last time I can remember really enjoying it was in an Asian (can't remember more specifically) restaurant in the L.A. area about 20 years ago.

It was both tender and savory, the way an Asian dish should be.

I see hundreds and hundreds of those lights all over the coastlines of China, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand , etc. Always wondered why some were green and some were white.

So, the moon comes out and the squid sees a yellow light and thinks...

yellow
yellow
yellow

GREEN!

He puts the pedal to the metal and you grab him.

Is that how it works?

Properly as in traditional Asian style or properly as in Asian American style?
very popular and common Asian snack, sold especially in every movie theater in Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Thailand.
The places reek of the odor, just as our movie theaters smell of popcorn.

I really don't know anything about Asian cooking, I just know that 9 out of 10 times that I try it, it is chewy and tasteless. It is rare for me to find squid worth eating, but I keep trying.

It IS chewy for sure. Basically, aquatic jerky and like beef jerky, the dried squid reconstitutes itself as dead uncooked squid, right in your mouth.
I've tried it numerous times in various places and never found any I liked even a little bit.
Ground or finely chopped and fried up in lumpia (Philippines) is better tho.
(lumpia is similiar to an eggroll but without the eggs. Much more spicy, and more like a flauta or taquita than an eggroll--great with copious volumes of cold San Miquel beer)

Squid and jellyfish and octopus and such? You can keep it.

Just lay a nice piece of steak or a burger in front of me…

😉

Even better than squid: Squid ink pasta!

Japanese places are real hit or miss around here, helps to have Japanese co-workers to ask for recommendations. Been having a hell of a time finding Japanese curry recently though, just been making it at home.
