Appliance Shortage (Page 1/2)

Parent's microwave died. Looking around trying to find a replacement, apparently there's a shortage of these, too. Seeing delivery dates of late December and January, one was APRIL.

Only one I can actually find in-stock anywhere is the same piece of crap I got a couple months ago for my place. Hate to see them literally throw money away on one of these, but 95%+ of our family cooking uses the microwave, might have to so they don't starve.

My central a/c has been out for nearly 3 weeks now. Waiting on 2 relays and a cap. Have 1 bedroom with a portable unit in it so life is bearble.

Supply line shortage us no joke.

I'm pretty sure these are things we'll all have to become accustomed to from now on. From now on. This is the new America. It will be a little more like the 2nd and 3rd world.

Sad fact
Appliances made now suck. Old appliances that last forever are not friendly to Global Warming so you can use them or they quit making repair parts. (They use a lot of power)
I have a 20 year old refrigerator that would cost $1400 to replace. I put in an aftermarket fan and its been doing great all summer long.

I got my mom a microwave when I got my first job before moving out. That was in 1984 and it was still sitting on the counter in 2016, it made a lot of noise from the fan but other than that it worked great.
But in the last 2 years I have replaced our microwave twice, all 3 of them new and brand names.

If I had the choice I would go to a repair place and buy an older used appliance.
But even those places are starting to be harder to find.

My microwave quit. I took the cover off and found a fuse inside that had blown.

I have also fixed a couple of with the same issue. Last two just started taking longer to heat things up, loss of power.

It's not just appliances.

My dear wife ordered herself a new Lazy Boy recliner just after Christmas this past January.

It was delivered last month.

As for microwaves, we ran into the same thing with supply shortage.

Our trusty old "nuker" finally went tits up while we were preparing dinner.

I immediately ran over to the local Wally World in search of another, imagining I would quickly return home as the "conquering hero" of the evening.

Empty shelves.....looked like shopping in a 3rd world country with a socialist government.

Went to Target store, shelves looked only marginally better and the only machine that looked like it might be acceptable size and quality, (and was in a box that didn't look like it had been returned and taped back closed), was one made by "Calphalon" brand.

It's one of those "all in one" contraptions that's a microwave, convection oven and an "air fryer".

Being a believer in simplicity of function, and therefore durability, in the machines I buy it was a hard choice to have to swallow, as well as the higher price, but it's what they had and I needed something in hand to be able to return home "triumphant".

"She who must be obeyed" eyed the new device with much suspicion, tried out the convection oven and air fryer features exactly ONCE, questioned my sanity but acknowledged my "heroism" anyway.

Two days later the damn thing popped a fuse.

Fortunately this one came with a spare fuse in the package and replacement is easy without disassembly.

It was at that point that we both came to the realization that we probably could have fixed the old one......

I think the supply chain issues are just catching up with a lot of the brands and becoming more apparent.

I purchased a new refrigerator in November of last year. It was delivered in May. Good thing I wasn't replacing a broken one, I was just moving the old (15 years or so) one to the garage.

Our year old washing machine started doing the "Nr" code on its screen mid wash, and then wouldn't finish the load. I Googled and tested things with the multimeter, and it's the water valve on the rear for the cold water. I swapped it over with the hot water valve until I can get a cold one delivered, and all our wash continues to be washed in cold water only. Now for the months long wait for China to get one made so it'll also break in about a year. >_<
