Almost classic vehicle purchase. (Page 1/1)

Edit. Not antique. Almost classic.
Considering an 03 great condition high mileage 2.0 NA Golf. 5 speed (which I don't prefer) Seems most other options. No modifications except a gay radio. My commute is dropping 89+ miles a day on my Escape. I'm basically only buying Ford and and German vehicles these days. Unless it's a flip for money.

I've been searching forever for the last year of Chevy Prizm (Toyota from NUMMI). I loved mine. 42MPG. Slow as molasses. They're pretty much gone. Almost would take the Corolla or Vibe/Matrix.

I'd love a Town Car (or that entire platform), but that puts me in no better situation than just driving the Escape. Probably worse fuel and repairs honestly due to age differences. Plus not cheap to buy or modified. Almost always poorly too. Ghetto rims. Stupid radio. Bad flashy paint.

I'm looking to move within viewing distance of my job. I doubt I buy another vehicle again if I pick this one up until I'm ready for another Super Duty. This isn't a sell one to get the other situation...and I do have trucks at my disposal when needed.

Few notes. It is steel wheels. Tires are great so those stay until I can find FACTORY alloys. Cheap ass radio. Looking to update to FACTORY newer with GPS, CAM and BT. Paint is original. Clear coat seems intact. Body looks straight. Carfax is clean; for whatever good that actually means. My mechanic IS willing to work on it. It needs nothing, that I'm aware.

What should I be looking for?

It'll never see any racing, coil overs, spoilers, or whatever the tuner market does these days. I'm planning to own it indefinitely like i wish I had my Prizm. MPG seems super low to me though. Especially with the manual.

Money has taken on a different value to me these days and I'm trying to be the most boring less than 40 year old you can meet.

Things I noticed. Tint is not great. Headlights are foggy. Both of those are safety issues in my book. Parts should be plentiful and cheap. It'll be a classic soon and stay unmolested.

I think I own (positive I own it) a similar year VW Beetle with the same engine. I am calling my uncle to find out in the morning. Bought it and it's out of state. It runs and drives, but is beat to christ. No usefulness to me for any utility and no idea it's maintenance since I bought it for a relative years ago.

For probably double the money I could get a much newer VW Jetta wagon. I'd probably want it in the 6 speed, but the slap shifter is fine in my 2014 sedan. It's NEVER used in that mode. It gets 42MPG with the 1.8T which is noticeably better than EPA on the 03 Golf and a TON more power. I don't think EPA rated it 42 MPG, but I have consistently got these numbers. Pure highway mind you. I just hate to spend the cash.

I'm only paying and selling these days in cash, guns, and ammo.

I have 10k rounds of 7.62x39 steel if anyone is looking. Not breaking cases though for sure. Not a drop of .38 special though.

Long winded. Thoughts though? No experience with this age VW. Never had the chance to see one someone didn't think was a racecar either though.

Does the radio front panel display look like this?

Extremely close, except for its some cheapo 1/2 DIN radio that looks like the mounting bracket was installed upside down.

VW isn't known for their premium interiors especially not 2 decades ago. Audi is obviously much better.

When I say the photos and that radio I thought, crap another ragged out ricer because it was also manual. Usually people doing this add. "CAI". Stupid exhaust. Cheap lowering kit. Rip interiors out to save weight. All kinds of dumb stuff my friends thought was cool in high school 20 years ago. $8000 carbon fiber hood saves 2lbs. No backseat. 40lbs. Screw a spare tire I've got fix a flat.

I don't want anyone's old dream project. 90 miles a day is no joke wear and tear just for work. Nothing on my sales trucks, but that isn't even including regular use mileage.

Gosh, talk about a difference in vehicles...........

Personally, my only advice would be to go with whatever pleases you most. Does this vehicle need to fulfill multiple roles or is it simply a singular purpose vehicle?

What will you enjoy driving the most? Does utility have any place in this discussion? I have no idea that's something only you can determine.

My last vehicle purchase was based entirely on what I wanted to enjoy driving. I have vehicles to do specific things there is no vehicle that would work for me as a "Do All".

You mention radios, probably the last consideration for me (different strokes for different folks). Radios can be changed/swapped. Get what ever suits your transportation and spiritual needs. The soul also needs to have a little fun now and then.

I have one of these... a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria LX-P74

I've modified it some, but only basic modifications such as the Grand Marquis Limited Sport Edition dual exhaust (free-flowing like the police exhaust, but quiet like grandpa exhaust). I installed the air box from the Mercury Marauder, and the air intake tube from the 2004 Police Interceptor, the larger throttle body from the 2004 Interceptor, and a computer re-flash for fuel, timing, and shifting.

With normal driving, the car is super quiet, and just coasts along with a very low exhaust note that you cannot hear inside the car. But anything over 2/3rd throttle and the line pressure changes.

Everything else is totally stock... and the car has about 40 some odd thousand miles on it... which is mostly from me moving so many times and taking the car with me. It basically just sits in the garage all the time.

I did upgrade the brakes, but only because they needed to be serviced from sitting so long, so I went with cross-drilled and slotted rotors all around.

I still have the 2.73:1 final drive "Unlimited Slip" differential. On highway road-trips, I average about 28-29 miles to the gallon so long as I stay between 65-70 miles an hour in cruise. I have the basic 16" allow wheels (not the hub-caps, but the aluminum / magnesium wheels).

Overall, it's a super nice car, really reminiscent of the kind of cars that used to roam the streets back in the day.

Again, I almost never drive it, but if you can find one in a condition like this, they are really good cars.

Parts are INSANELY cheap, I mean super dirt cheap.

The transmissions and engines are rock solid, and there's no "common problems" with them either.

The only thing mine does not have is the powered sunroof, which was offered that year, but it was a "custom" modification where the factory sent it down the street about 30 miles to get modified.

EDIT to say, if you can find one from an old person, like a Grand Marquis or a civilian Crown Victoria (pre-2005), then you can usually get a great deal on them, and it should last forever if all you're doing is just doing a daily grind. It's the only car that I'm aware of that successfully has been crash-test rated to 75mph front and back. You can beat the piss out of it in day to day traffic and it'll take it and not leave you stranded.

They are floaty, like a yacht, so not awesome if you want something that handles curves... but again, if all you're looking for is a beater that you can get to work with, that's super cheap... it's a good option. Just keep your foot out of it, and you should be fine.

Ron it needs no real utility. I don't prefer coupes. The hatch will make it at least not useless. 90ish miles a day on the Ford is just a hassle. I only mentioned radio, I hadn't yet seen it in person. Usually when people do that they've done other cheapo upgrades and I want no part of it. A to B only vehicle. I hate driving anymore anyway, so hopefully I get moved soon enough. I'm a VW fan after my last Jetta. I want a Jetta Wagon. Would take either engine in it. The TDI gets 50+, but the TSI still gets 42.

I knew you had one Todd. Yeah I probably would also upgrade brakes when replacing. Safety issue. I have been looking for one forever. All ghetto mods. I'm out.

I did get to look at it. Going to test drive it tomorrow. It is clean and straight. Good tread and it isn't the steels so that's cool. Looks 100% factory which is what I want. Just want it to last and not nickle and dime me. Nothing flashy or fancy.

In that case, I'll stick with my initial advice.
