Attic latch (Page 1/1)

Looking for an Attic access panel latch. Wondering if any of you might have ideas on how to secure the panel. Maybe a slide latch.

On very - very windy days, because our roof has gable vents, the panel makes noise and has in the past, been sucked up into the opening.

Photo of the panel, it's not hinged, it's just a push up panel. Thank you for any information.

Yes, just slide bolts on either end. You can also add some weatherstrip foam around the edge to really stop the noise if the panel still moves slightly.

I'll make a recommendation though. Used a few washers underneath the latches to raise them off the plywood hatch. The reason is that when simply mounted, the latch sits flush on the plywood hatch and if you drill the 1/4" hole in the frame to lock it, you risk tearing out the edge of the wooden frame rendering everything useless. Also use a nut and bolt on the hatch panel instead of wood screws so they don't strip out.

Search for "sash latch". There are several different styles. They used to be used on old wooden windows.
The advantage is that they can be snugged up tight to eliminate the rattle.

I would do magnets.

Ya gotta be sure....

Weld it in place, gorilla glue, a dozen railroad spikes then just to make sure staple the hell out of it

Or, some weather stripping and barrel bolts.

Whichever seems like a good idea at the time

I'd just go for the "elegant" engineering solution and put a weight, (a brick) on the top side of the panel.

Heavy enough to prevent the air pressure differential from lifting the wood panel yet not too heavy to lift the panel with one hand (or two) and slide it out of the opening.

Put a couple of handles in the center of it and a few strips of velcro tape along the edges that mate with the fascia.

Okay, problem fixed, was a 5 min fix.

Thanks for all the idea's, the slide barrel bolt worked the best. The wood frame had enough space to drill for the slide w/o any problem.
