He was quite a unique fellow.
(Caution: Contains Music and high levels of Cosmic Mysticism* )

This is back when NY was "interesting".

I'll tell you right now, the Brother From Another Planet never made it to the west coast of Canada. That was some weird schit!

Cool! I love it when someone does something truly creative and unique. I've got some listening to do.

I got about half way through the documentary when the phone rang. I will finish watching it later.

I remember when a radio DJ broadcast the Sun Ra track "My Favorite Things" and I thought that was a great rendition of "My Favorite Things." An extraordinary rendition. (But not a kidnapping, legal or otherwise.) A worthy counterpart to the legendary version from the John Coltrane Quartet.

I've not had much Sun Ra. That's the only Sun Ra track that I remember, and now I don't really remember the music itself; just the memory of having encountered it on a radio broadcast.

I heard many of his phrases in other places, didn't know who originally said them.

like this track that is pretty "chill". Takes a minute or two to get into it, but its

"Space is the Place"

I am drawn towards certain people. People who do their own thing and just lean into it, and don't harm anyone... and are "successful". Even thought I'm not "into" some of what this guy is all about , (all the "I'm from saturn" type stuff) this "kinda unkown by most" guy made his own record label, created over 200 physical records, and influenced a bunch of well-known musicians. Lots of musicians mention Sun Ra....And he isn't negative. He wasn't some suicide cult leader or "mate with all the women" or steal all their money stuff. And I don't think he was even into drugs, (he WAS drugs) Ha!

Love the clip of the guy discussing the hospital visit in the documentary - Doc is checking him out, and orders a neuro screening because he said his name was Sun R and he was born on Saturn", and the other doctor cancelled it because he WAS Sun Ra and came from Saturn!

This movie is crazy, I have only watched small clips of it. There's some nudity, and some roughing up of women by (intergalatic?) pimps. I think? I didn't watch too much of it. It's waaay out there. but It's a time capsule glipse of one aspect of the early 70's. I think, maybe? It's just VERY "different". Not saying it's "good". just "different". The scene at the hospital where the guy was outside the door made me LMAO. (what's he gonna do with TWO...?") hahahaha, then he leaves in his hospital gown.... hah

It sounds like in the 60's-70's, there were "houses" like college dorms where folks of similar interest would gather/live/squat. Some were probably "dangerous" or anti-establisment or terrorists or drug dens or something, I dunno- it's just a period of time I am ignorant of, not being alive at the time.

Anyway, that track is kinda fun.

He is different. and life is boring if everyone's the same (imo).

Love you all, have a good weekend.

Sun Ra Quartet "My Favorite Things" (1978)

Contrast that (from Sun Ra) with the intensely modal, post-bop arrangement of "My Favorite Things" from the John Coltrane Quartet that was released on Atlantic Records in 1961.
