FedEx is looking to install anti-missile lasers on some of its jets, according to a proposal it sent to the FAA.
The request, submitted for government approval back in 2019, is atypical for commercial and civilian planes.
The FAA will hear public comment for 45 days before making its decision on allowing FedEx to adapt the tech.

Why stop with just their aircraft?

Why don't they insist on installing them on all their trucks as well.

If read carefully, the real answer to why they want to do this is right in the article":

"The company could also be planning on purchasing some A321 planes as part of a civil reserve aircraft fleet that the military could employ in hostile territories, he added."

They're trying to position themselves for a lucrative gooberment contract.

Check proposals submitted to the DoD and you'll very likely find one from FedEx on how they could "privatize" military air cargo and save costs over the USAF.

Contracted cargo (and military passenger) leases has always been a big $$ maker. Called 'supplemental carriers and nonskeds'
Entire airline companies were created or shifted around to get DoD contracts during Vietnam and even during the shorter Iraq wars specifically for this.
Flying Tigers Air made most of their revenue thru military contracts to the far East, eventually bought up by Fedex in'88.
I and a planeload of other Marines and sailors went from North Carolina to Vietnam on Saturn World Air but Seaboard was also a big CRAF company but nowadays, civ reserve air fleet contracts with some big names.

I don't blame FedEx forwanting to arm their aircraft. The ship to air-air to air-ground to air missile market has gotten crazy in the last few years, with dozens of nations making their own.
The Philipines just announced a contract to buy supercruise missile technology from an Indian/Russian company called BrahMos.

I don't think I ever suggested that I have any problem with it either.

Considering that modern military conflicts are now "run what ya brung", logistical transport becomes more important than it ever was before.

HEH...Interesting that you posted that.

The planned active counter measures on FedEx aircraft would be completely ineffective against that ZSU-23-2, (2 mile effective range)

I've seen a ZSU-23-4 in Iraq at night and it was a damn impressive light show. If he turned on the radar I didn't get a warning, but no matter as we had Wild Weasels just hoping for a shot and EF-111A Spark Varks jamming the bejeesus out of anything hostile.

Supposedly Air Force One has an anti-missile laser system. I don't know personally, just read some stories. Interesting that FedEx wants one installed.

Based on the increasing loss of packages, robberies, carjackings, package thefts by porch pirates and such, that might be a good idea.
