Sure, I can believe it. I am a bit surprised about Paul McCartney, but not a bit surprised at Hendrix or SRV.
One does not need to read to speak a language, but it sure does help. I would encourage anyone who wants to learn an instrument to learn some theory.
It's like trying to discuss politics without knowing history. You can do it, but you are going to get lost.
