In the pilot episode of Star Trek the Next Generation, humanity was put on trial by Q (a powerful alien) who said that humanity was a violent and selfish species. Q asked why should humanity be allowed to roam in the universe giving its violent history. In the Star Trek timeline, after the example of WW3 and a Eugenics War, Data (the android) helping to defend humanity said this:

Heard a good thing once - what differentiated Star Trek from other 'Sci Fi" stuff...
HOPE. Blade Runner, Terminator, Aliens, so many others were about SURVIVAL, finding small fragments of "good" among the grey static...
But Star Trek is a glimpse of a future when humanity finally was able to shrug off all the stupid sh*t and get to a "higher" place.
I wonder sometimes (often), how many folks would really actually WANT that future...
I struggle (some days, more then others) to remain optimistic.
