Weed Wacker - Have you thought of this? (Page 1/4)

I have a Worx cordless weed wacker. There’s a lot about this thing that I like. 😀
But…there is one feature that is annoying as hell. The constant spooling out of that nylon tennis string crap. 🙁 It’s downright depressing how fast I go through spools of line!

Be that as it may, I thought to myself, “Hey, what if I took an empty plastic spool and put in bicycle brake cable?” Or, SOMETHING that is more robust than that dreaded nylon line?

Have you tried something like this?
Thanks, Kit

I use...well, used last year...these type things.

About 20 bucks here to do the change-over from string

What regulates the speed with which it's spooled out? You say it's "constant". It's not determined by how much has been worn away?

Can you not simply use a heavier and/or thicker gauge nylon line? I think that would be a whole lot safer than trying to use a metal brake cable!

One I had, you would tap the ground to let out some more string. Is that the “norm”?

Worx does a free spool for life I thought.

I have a Worx trimmer myself, though I hardly use it. So I haven't went through my first spool yet.

It’s supposed to spool out automatically every time you turn it off and I believe but it doesn’t work. I have to manually turn it upside down, press this little rectangular button on the motor spool assembly thingy while I pull out more line. I have to do this every 4-5 minutes if weed wacking.

I tried some 200,000 psi high tensile wire once.
ONCE!

Tap it on the ground while running. It will automatically feed out more.

Mine works great.

Most spool case w/ a button on side to feed will feed X amount every time you cycle power to the motor.
If not or seems not...

If use next to Fences or other things and string wears or break fast then string can't feed fast or not at all because exposed/active string is too short.
Chain link and other types will often break any line and many other options.

Spool, Case or both have problems.
Try another spool.
Case have moving parts that can have problems or gets crap blocking it/them to feed.

Most of spools w/ this setup have 2 notch sets. 1 on inside other on outside.
Motor on rotation make a latch to pick next step on 1 notch side.
Motor off latch move to other side to finish feed operation.
But needs enough active line to rotate the spool. More so when has a spring to keep the spool loaded.
Short line then latch trying to step won't happen.

Ryobi One and 40v and others weed cutters use about same setup.
Ryobi has plastic blade sets to replace line but they won't last long against chain link fence and related things too.
Example: RYOBI-2-in-1-Pivoting-Fixed-Line-and-Bladed-Head PN AC052N1 https://www.homedepot.com/p...ad-AC052N1/308813600

⚠️ Warning: Do Not use Metal to replace "Nylon" line.
Pieces of metal line when will fail are bad news.
If pieces don't hit you when goes flying... Anything can step on or hit steel fragments later w/o warming.
If any have used wire wheels on grinder drills etc and have needles sticking in you hands or worse will know the problem.
