Dad jumps into action to shield son from angry rodeo bull

BELTON, Texas (KWTX/Gray News) – A father in central Texas is being celebrated after he jumped into the ring at a rodeo earlier this month to save his son from a raging bull.

Landis Hooks jumped in the ring after seeing his 18-year-old son, Cody, thrown from the bull quickly after leaving the gate at the PRCA rodeo. His son was left unconscious because of the fall.

“All I could think about was just covering him up because he couldn’t cover himself up,” Hooks told KWTX.

Video of the ordeal shows the dad jumping in action to cover his son with his body.

“I’d much rather do that than get in a cage and go cage fighting, I can promise you that,” said Hooks, who used to ride bulls, too.

The video has gone viral since its release, with many commenters calling him a hero and some arguing Hooks should be nominated for “Father of the Year.”

Hooks said he doesn’t think he’s a hero and said he’d do it all again in a heartbeat, even if the bull had done more serious damage.

Whoa!

I'll bet he didn't even think about it before he cleared that fence. Father of the Year contended in my mind.

I'd say he thought about and knew this was the best way to protect him. The mind decides upon action very fast in males in intense situations. Females scream. Men act.

Don't tell that to my wife. When a 300+ pound black bear attacked our dog out side the door before dawn a few years ago, my wife ran out into the darkness to drive whatever was after the dog away. The bear came at her and she backed into the doorway and continued to wave her arms and yell as the bear stared her down 18 inches away. Satisfied that he had intimidated her, the bear went to finish off the dog. Not one to give up, Anne went out and tried to drive the bear off. The bear backed her in two more times before he decided to give up and ran off. My wife said later that she remembered what she was taught when growing up about dealing with bears. She said the mother instinct kicked in and all she could think about was saving her "baby".

The bear had grabbed the dog from behind as he raised his leg to pee. His canines punctured his back on either side of his spine and tore the hide loose inside his leg and belly. The vet tried to save him, but he died two days later from the internal injuries. But, you can't say my wife didn't try.

Confident men have no issues with strong women. Cowardice and courage are not limited to any particular sex.

Or just wait till the corn syrup has soaked down with rest of the oils to create the same fossil fuel just a million years later.

I suspect there was supposed to be more than that to your post.

Hardly... I'd say 95% or more of people in this world do NOT react in intense situations... they either freeze up, or break down.

I don't know how you change this... if it's upbringing or a learned behavior.

I don't actually expect you to answer this without an insult or some crazy response... just throwing this out there for everyone. Serious question though, because I'm trying to teach my daughter this.

It's something I've always taken pride in... when stuff really gets scary / dangerous, my brain usually switches into another mode and I just do what needs to be done... without even really thinking. But I don't know if this was something I was taught, or if it's something that I developed.

You might've been addressing this to sourmash, but he appears to have his hands full in Politics & Religion. I'll therefore relate my own experience in regards to one's brain switching to "another mode".

Waaay back when I was 19 years of age, I joined a martial arts club. I wanted to learn some self defense. It was kickboxing/karate. We sparred (full contact) every session, and I remember the first few times that my focus was all over the place. I was aware of the instructor, I was aware of all the other students, I was aware of the entire room. It's almost like my opponent was secondary... which wasn't good! I'd be getting nailed far too often! Eventually, over time, I learned to narrow my focus, tighter and tighter... to the point where nothing else in the world existed except for my opponent and myself.

When I look back, I feel that learning to focus entirely on the task at hand (especially in a dangerous/stressful situation), and to act calmly and appropriately without really needing to "think", was the most valuable lesson I learned from my martial art days. And although it hasn't been required too many times in my life, there have been several occasions when that learned response, that total focus has kicked in, and I'm grateful for it.

And for anyone to state that only men can learn to act in this manner is... a lot of BULL! (See what I did there.)
