Yep, it told the whole story in only 60 seconds.

You think that's real? I was trying to figure it out. I question whether or not the engine would have stalled being on its side and the fuel pump possibly pulling in air. Maybe even the oil sump flooding the crankcase and filling the PCV and intake... just a thought. But I suppose if it was only brief... maybe the engine was still running.

depends how much fuel was in the tank. Tank runs long ways under the bed, so if flipped on it's side as long as the tank was 1/2 full the pickup tube on the electric fuel pump would still be submerged. Even if it picked up air, the pressurized air would push whatever fuel was in the lines and frame rail mounted filter on to the engine.

I saw an interview with the state trooper and he confirmed it happened and he was on Good Morning America at about 1:55 in the following video:

16 years old I think.

Haha, that's crazy then... I can only imagine.

Ya looks like it was only on its side for maybe 5 seconds. With the fuel system pressurized like it is Id think running would be fine.

Also, don't most "modern" engines turn "mostly off" whenthe vehicle is not accelerating? When the light turns green, you hear the starter motor do its thing...

Not sure what controls that - the car senses no forward motion, the brake is being applied, etc...
(ok, I googled it it's called a "Stop-start" engine...)

...guess that truck wasn't really "at rest", huh....

This one looks like a 2004 style Chevy pickup which I dont think had that option. (not sure)

I have a 2008 Silverado and it doesn't 'turn off when not accelerating.'

In other news, the insurance company hauled the red truck off but a local Chevy dealer and GM went together to give the driver a brand new shiny red 2022 Chevy truck.

"Chevrolet, together with Bruce Lowrie Chevrolet of Fort Worth, TX, are donating a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT All Star Edition in cherry red to Riley Leon and his family after he survived a powerful tornado while driving in his Silverado. We are thankful Riley is safe, commend his driving skills during a frightening situation, and our hearts are with other families in Texas that have been affected by these storms. To help aid the recovery efforts in Texas, Chevy Cares is donating $50,000 to the American Red Cross disaster relief fund. Due to the quick action of the team at Bruce Lowrie Chevrolet, the new truck will be presented to Riley and his family on Saturday, March 26, at the dealership."
