Wholesome. (Page 1/2)

Had a nice weekend. My son and I took our latest robotic endeavor to the local MakerFaire.

Some of you might be aware of our project. But here's the 30 second explaination:

The CrafsMan makes all kinds of stuff. He has a great YouTube Channel. He's portrayed as a rather friendly furry gentleman. Some folks who don't craft enjoy watching/listening to his episodes in a similar way that they would Bob Ross. The actual CrafsMan would prefer to remain anonymous. But we wanted him to be able to experience all the fun and random moments of positivity which occur at MakerFaire. So we built a telepresence robot for him so he would be able to "be there" but also remain anonymous.

At the MakerFaire, he gave a talk about Making and then met casually with folks afterwoods.

We are currently editing the video of his talk, but here is one of the interactions during the "meet and greet" - We LOVE watching their expressions - that moment when they realize he can actually SEE them. :

CrafsMan is envious of his hair.

He admires her shirt.

He suggests a snow cone (or two).

Video

How do we know this experiment "worked"? All of the people who interacted with him spoke directly to the puppet instead of the camera!

What a great day.

We need more of this sort of thing happening.

His Channel

So that's actually a robot in the video, and not someone's hand coming up through a hole in the table into a puppet? That's pretty neat!

Lisa loves Crafsman and watches the channel all the time. She loved the robot!

Yeah, it's pretty much THIS underneath.

There are a few different ways he can connect to it remotely. It's not THAT complicated, it was more difficult to get his look "right"

I have more clips, I'll share them once I am done editing them. He is as nice "in-person" as he is in his videos.

Do you have any idea just how AWESOME you are for being able to do stuff like that?

And you just casually say, "so I built a robot," like everybody does that. Like I say, "So I mowed my lawn."

You are very kind to say that. I feel the same way when someone here says "I did an engine swap" like everybody does that. Like I say "I went to the store and bought some milk.". Heh.
