'toki-dokie'.. rising like a phoenix from the flames of extinction, the Japanese toki (Page 1/1)

Not quite 20 years ago, the number of wild-living Japanese toki was zero. Now it's almost 500 wild-living specimens, all on Japan's Sado Island.

It took some help from China. Starting in or shortly after 1998, Japan's Sado Island was repopulated with wild-living toki, by importing birds from a captive breeding program in China. That became possible after a population of just 7 of the wild-living toki were discovered in a remote area of China's Shaanxi province.

When Japan's wild-living population had dwindled to just 5, the Japanese Department of Toki (so to speak) captured these last 5 birds and tried to breed them in captivity, but that effort did not fare well. So enter the Chinese.

The bird is also known as the Japanese crested ibis.

The Whooping Crane also came very near extinction in the US 5 decades ago. There were once thousands that migrated bettween Canada and Texas but by the early 1940s, less than 20 were known to be alive in the wild. By the late 60s there were only 6 counted.

That is neat. I was not even aware of this species.
