So today my younger sister has a friend over. While her friend and her mom were on the way here, they got a flat. Having stopped at a tire shop, I picked them up while they waited for their car to be serviced. The shop advised to let them replace a "seized caliper", rotor, and pads for $700. When she told me that, I asked her to let me take a look at it before doing anything. They brought the car over, and whaddya know, the caliper wasn't seized in the slightest. Looks like something gouged the rotor, so there was a bit of a valley, but that was it. They never even took off the caliper, the bolts were all completely undisturbed. Slide pins were very free as well. They also tried to get another $300 for a ball joint, which i couldn't find any issue with either. no play in the wheel, and i could feel grease in the BJ as well.
I understand upselling, but flat out lying to their face for an egregious amount of money for a simple repair don't sit well with me

Unfortunately, this is no revelation. There are honest shops (somewhere out there), but they're few and far between.

My ex mother-in-law had new shocks, struts, rotors, pads and a battery replaced. She got home and asked me to take a look at it as it didn't drive any better. The only thing they changed was the battery. Took the car and the receipt back to the shop and asked them to give me the old parts. They said they couldn't because I was not the owner so I had her come in then asked again. When they couldn't produce the parts I asked if I could talk to a manager, then I took the manager out to the car and told him I found the old parts.
They refunded her the parts and labor and only charged her for the battery. They were out of business 6 months later.
I have dealt with some good shops, the ones that will do the hard things I don't have time or space to do but for small things I will never trust anyone again.

Jake- that is just horrible. I can't stand shops (Or anybody) taking advantage of older people...."Would you want someone ripping off YOUR mother?"
I think there should be a law that directly addresses this situation.....Maybe; Judge; "You are convicted of having stolen from and abused numerous older people....So we are only going to lock you up for 10 hours"
Slime-ball; "Ten hours? Wow, thanks!"
Judge; "Let me finish.....lock him up.... in a vat of boiling oil!"

Few and far between indeed.. There is a good documentary on youtube were they test out a dozen or so shops in their area, and i think all of them where reporting false repairs to jack up the costs.
