82-T/A [At Work] or others Have you ever seen this before? (Page 1/2)

Since you have done a refurbishing of older houses, I thought you may have seen this... I was up in the attic last night looking around and saw an odd thing. Along one side, attached to three different rafters, there were 3 approx 1'x1' boards, with a 2" hole drilled thru them in a line. Inserted, was a long 1 /12" wooden dowel. Looked exactly like a closet rod, but bigger rod and long. Maybe 15' total length. Also, farther down, I saw another long rod of the same diameter just laying on the insulation.
My 1st thought was "Who the heck would hang clothes in a dusty hot attic in central Texas?"

After looking around, at the spaghetti like run of romex and data line running everywhere, I have concluded that perhaps the builders put it up to hold spools of wiring while they were wiring the house originally and just left it there.

Correct assumption?

(the only other thing up there was a half a box of bathroom 1'x1' tile, and piles of cuttings from data cable ends where someone did a lot of splicing/dicing. And, 3 metal bedframes.)

If they were pulling wire off a spool on a rod you would see marks where the spool was turning.
I agree with you that is probably what they used it for, but you never know it could be used to dry plants.

And here I thought you were going to ask about knob and tube wiring. That was what I came across in the one old house I renovated. Never again!

You sure it isn't old Knob-and-Tubing?

Definitely not knob & tubing. House not that old but I once lived in one that had a barn with K&B.
Next time I'm up there, I'll take a picture.
Too hot right now to go in an attic..

I think your assumptions are correct as well. I've not seen that.

When you say data cables, it's not just RJ12, but actually RJ45s? I'd assume then they brought in not just an electrician, but someone who specialized in outfitting a home with network cables (which was really popular / common in the 2000s). But yeah, I think you're spot on. I've never seen that though.

But hey, I bet you'd be able to dry clothes up there FAST!!!

Several different kinds of data lines up there. As technology improved, they just spooled out the new stuff and left the older cables laying where they were.

While adding on to and renovating my current home, the cable techs and electricians used a similar tool to run the wiring/cable but, they didn't leave it. I suspect you are correct. Reference the older wiring, it got left in place also. Wasn't worth the effort, time or cost to pull it back out.

1 1/2" wooden rods. Brought it and another one a little longer down to use for 'something' later..

Does the wooden rod smell like cannabis?

My first thought was a hang-dry area for plants but that would be a strange spot for it to be mounted.
