Fan noise (Page 1/2)

Not from a car or sports, but portable household fans. Seems like every fan I buy will start making noise after a while. Maybe a few months or a year, but it will start to 'rattle' a little depending on speed and/or angle it's set at. I have been able to use some spray grease or oil of varying types to temporarily quite them down by spraying the fan shaft, but doesn't last long. I hate throwing stuff out because of little issues like this, but the noise gets annoying. Ceiling fans are also a problem, but that's another topic.

According to Volt, the "normal" fan turnover is about three years.

Old school metal fans with ball bearings lasted for decades... the cheap newer ones with (usually copper) bushings have to deal with gravity and friction, and you get the whuh whuh whuh after awhile...

Also, the government *might* have released something in the air which, as a random side effect, causes fans to make noise. (That's how you know they did that)

ooops, sorry, it's BRONZE, not copper.

noisy fans..seems like they all do it.
Why?
because a fan's gotta do what a fan's gotta do...

I had a bathroom fan that was probably original to the house (1973) that I kept going until maybe 1990's by relubricating the bushing every couple of years.

Annoying? Yes. Am I cheap? Also yes.

I learned the secret years ago....

Turn into a dickhead and refuse to fix anything for anybody, and all your fans go away.

The noise stops.

It's blissfully quiet.

Often the "oil" in braze/bronze bearing go "Rancid" over time and get worse when you put whatever oil in them.
If a fan is in a high heat area like say an attic in summer then the oil can go bad Very Fast often in Months.

You need to clean old oil and that can be hard depending on how you get access to them.

Ones on Shaded Motors like bathroom vents often can be taken apart and soak the bearing in cleaner for a few days if needed. Then wait days for cleaner to dry out. or heat them a bit to send up drying out of very small spaces in the bronze. Watch max temp because many have plastic parts.

If you don't remove all old oil or cleaner then even if you get right oil... it reacts w/ them and back to "square one" and likely very soon.

Do Not use grease.

Note: If the bearing bind up or "seized" completely, most have "1 shot" Thermal Fuse that will cook off. This is often buried in the motor.

Don't buy cheap fans. Go to a farm supply place and buy small direct drive high velocity drum fans. I had one that ran almost continuously May-Sept for about 8 years.
You probably won't recognize the brand names on good ones. Avoid fans with brand names you recognize. craftsman/hypertough/lasko.. even dewalt. They're still crap, just with a recognizable name plastered on them. Might be too loud for your need but they'll outlast anything coming from Walmart or other big box stores.

I've got an old metal blade one from the 80's... Still works great! Way stronger than the new plastic ones.
