Janet Jackson has never had the opportunity to crash any of my computers. And neither has that Bieber kid.

That is a great story! It just goes to show that sometimes things really are the way they seem. However, in my opinion, they solved the wrong problem.

Back around 30 years ago, I was assigned a brand new Ford L9000 with an early N14. I noticed right away that there was a problem. Power was low, exhaust temps were high and fuel consumption was terrible.

I kept complaining and they kept telling me I didn't know what I was talking about.

Well, they finally got tired of listening to me and put it on a dyno, then showed me a perfect dyno report. All of the numbers were textbook.
I hung my head and walked away. When I got out to the truck and opened the hood, there was a brand new turbo glistening in the sunshine. They told me they just steam cleaned it, but the truck ran a whole lot better after that.

Willie, I've never known of a diesel (or gasoline/NG ) engine with a bad turbo that DIDN'T put out plenty of light colored smoke on top of poor performance. one of the telltale signs, but those N14s were more notorious for bad injectors and bad injector harneses.

It wasn't a turbo failure, it was bad from the start. Apparently it was a bad casting, a restriction in the exhaust.

I can tell a bad injector. The first time I heard one, I thought a rocker had broken.

The point of the story was that the Janet Jackson fans were probably told that they were just imagining things, just like me, they were being ignored. But, the problem was real. It was the people who were supposed to know better that were clueless.

When I went to school for auto mechanics, back in the mid '70s, we were told a story about a customer who used to stop for ice cream on his way home from work. When he bought vanilla or chocolate, everything was fine; but when he bought something more unusual his car would not start. As it turns out, the common flavors were right in front of the store, but the specialty flavors were near the back. The extra time it took to go to the back and select from a wide variety of choices was enough for vapor lock to set in.

My 1999 Firebird Formula had a rearend making noises...Complained to the service manager a couple of times- while they were doing something I asked if they could check the rearend...When I picked it up I asked about the rearend- "Huh- Oh yeah....Looked good- no problems!"

The noises got worse- So I went in and asked, "How much for a rear-axle oil change?" The service manager stated, "$110" ....I then said, "That is a DEAL- go ahead and change the fluid- but could you have your rearend guy take a look while it's open?"

I was in the showroom looking at a couple of new cars when I heard my name over the PA....Went back to the service bay- The Rearend guy had looked at it and they were going to have to replace the whole rearend. It had been set up wrong and if caught early it could have just been re-adjusted- but too much damage had taken place by this time.

Personally, I'd like to get a chance to knock that service manager on his keister.
