Avast VPN and other anti-virus suggestions. (Page 1/1)

Just received an e-mail (my pay-pal account shows it too) that Avast charged me $98.99 for their VPN service. I did sign up and endured a free trial of Avast's VPN service. However, the free trial information stated that it can be cancelled any time with no charges. So after seeing that it dropped my DL speeds from an average of 600mbps to 200mbps I cancelled the service a week before the trial was set to end, un-installed the Avast VPN software as well. Well now a week later (a day after the free trial ended) my pay-pal gets charged. I was able to call and talk to Habib at Avast and he first tried to only give me a 50% refund. After some bickering I was able to get a full refund (time will tell if that is true). I asked how this happened when I cancelled my service a week before the free trial ended. Long story of it they claim it was a glitch. I find it very hard to believe in this day and age that this was a glitch. If their software engineers can't get their sh!t together to keep this from happening then I don't trust anything from their company at all.

So, with that lovely experience with Avast I will be un-installing their anti-virus software as well.

I am up for suggestions for other free anti-virus providers. AVG is on my radar at first but I am open to suggestions.

Windows AV has been good regardless of BS pushed by others.
I stopped paying for AV many years ago because most have big problems eating CPU time, memory, changing files in different ways causing huge problems for Backup programs and more. I still find old files w/ Alt Data Streams added by Norton and others.

Most VPN are a huge scam and Doesn't protect you. Doesn't block most tracker either.
About the only thing is local ISP and "Free WiFu" can't see anything. When your dealing w/ HTTPS they don't get much data expect what address a site is and maybe the DNS query. Most Browsers now have DNS over HTTPS so can't see a query.
Worse many VPN are owned by a few Foreign companies and ToS etc on their web site means Zero.

It changes now and then... but for right now, Q4/2022 (or even all of 2021 and 2022), Microsoft Defender is the best you can buy.

I used to use AVG as well, but Microsoft Defender has been better than AVG for a number of years. What makes Defender better than the others is that it actually uses machine learning to identify malware, not just heuristics and signature detection.

As far as VPN solutions... you're always going to have reduced speeds because you're hopping to different nodes and they don't all have the same bandwidth and throughput. A much cheaper (and better) solution in my opinion is NORD VPN, but works well, but really, a VPN isn't all that necessary. The question I would ask is... what is it you're trying to accomplish? Are you just trying to obfuscate your presence? There's a few things you can do... one is to download / purchase a product called KAMO, which changes your online signature every hour or 30 minutes.

Also, if you don't like to have a presence on your own computer (clear cookies and stuff), you can buy CCleaner that wipes your cache and other cookies / reg keys regularly.

Just make sure you know all your passwords. Everytime I used CCleaner I had to manually type in each password and username afterwards.
