Win 7 box. Ripping CDs. No Metadata (album art/track names) (Page 1/3)
Raydar OCT 19, 11:13 AM
So... apparently, Microsloth killed the metadata server that Windows Media Player connected to, to grab CD album data.
Does anyone have an alternative site, and a way to redirect WMP to find this stuff again?

I'm also not averse to using a third party app to Rip CDs, but my VLC apparently can't do any better.

Before anyone says "ditch win 7".... No. This box has all my tunes on it. Not starting over, right now.

Thanks.

Many 3rd party tools have problems even if uses "open source"/"free" metadata.

MS change the metadata server name and ip address and other things to kill all older WMP even in older Win10.

Try ripping in WMP then use mp3tag program but watch what tag version(s) because many things will "crash" w/ some versions.
tool/option/tag/mpeg Remove All. Write ID3v1, ID3v2 w/ ID3v2.3 UTF-16

The tool I use for ripping is Linux only: http://littlesvr.ca/asunder/index.php

Whenever I buy a CD, I use Asunder to copy it to the hard drive, then tag it with MusicBrainz.

I hadn't ripped CDs for years... but a few months ago I decided I wanted to get back into it. I did a bit of research to see what free program out there would do the best job of ripping CDs on my Win7 PC. I chose Exact Audio Copy... and it's great!

US Radio stations are mostly own by a very few companies like Clear channel AKA Iheartcrap and many do not want to listen.
That's on top of places where can't get a signal.

Why would you need to start over?

Raydar is a smart, tech savvy guy, so I am sure he has a good reason. For me, I have been copying my music folder forward since the nineties. It still has some .wma files created with Win98. I have been using Debian for over 20 years, since 2.2 Potato and now I save everything as a .flac file with the album art integrated into each file. It works well with Kodi and VLC.

For my own recordings, I use Puddletag to add the metadata.

Puddletag is great for creating the data or editing individual files, but Musicbrainz is a real timesaver for entire albums. I have some fairly obscure stuff in my collection (as you might imagine) and there is only one album it has failed to find.

I still have my first mp3 file.
I downloaded it in several segments from an internet "news" group and compiled it into the mp3 file.
This was right before they got all crazy about making copies of music. You know like we have done for ever with tape players and the radio.
