True story...

Some of the chains here run "surveys" at the check-out and unless you give them your (a B.S.) postal/zip code, they wont sell you the stuff.

I still remember my childhood one 400km away so that's what they get.

I was in a Guitar Center store a few years ago and I told the the clerk he didn't need my phone number. He was so confused he had to call someone else to complete the transaction.

Radio Shack in Canada used to be the worst.
You're buying a $5 cable and they wanted all your information.
Then, they'd also ask if you wanted to pay $3 for "extended warranty" on that $5 cable??

another now commonplace ploy is asking if you want to sign up for their 'rewards' program and for that, they use your ph # as your primary identifier. But, they want your Ph#, your name, your email addy, and your address.
Prepare for your metal mailbox and your email box to start getting ads and it is difficult if not impossible to unsubscribe from some of them.
I've only once seen any real 'reward' for using one of those programs and that was at the local Ace Hardware and it was pretty small. $5 off or buy one get one free type things.
Not really worth it considering I have spent thou$and$ at the 2 local hardware stores since arriving here in June.
