Any fiero owners out there into the art of model trains?

Went to a show in St.Paul and looked like a goofball putting my purchases up front to keep em away from the heat in the rear trunk.

Heat you feel opening the trunk is engine heat and often not same temp for things in the trunk.

Unless you're missing heat shields or have other problems, the trunk won't get hot enough to melt your trains.
More so w/ 4 cyl. Even driving on warm days.

Many people remove shield to do other work and don't put them back.
Or have shield and/or trunk has "rusted out" and don't fix/replace them.
Or have exhaust leak(s) pointed to whatever.

But don't put frozen or cold food in there for a long trip. You can't fit most hard coolers including small units because of shape alone. Soft "coolers" might fit But Most have very little or no insulation.

Can't say I've ever jumped into model trains as a hobby, always enjoyed them and go to the model train shows/exhibitions frequently. Over Thanksgiving I and family went to Union Station in Kansas City where there was a huge display of operating model trains. It was really cool seeing all the interacting trains and scenery they build. Way more effort and expense than I would go to (at least in the scenery) but, I do think it's a cool hobby.

I have this 8x8 O gauge setup for the holiday season in my basement now. These are mostly my fathers trains from the 1950's which still run well. I did spring for a new Thomas the tank engine locomotive for my son so there are some modern cars....yes the setup is messy but with kiddos it is hard to keep it all in order



With my elementary age daughters and the buzz words being STEAM or STEM i think Lionel could make a great series of trains which would be a build your own from a kit. Assemble a drive motor or transformer....3d design and print shells for cars. It could be great to learn about electricity and technology while engaging a new generation.

My Hornby OO Thomas collection has taken several rides in the trunk of my old '85 Duke.

Thanks. Inherited it from my grandfather. He never got around to finishing the landscaping so that's one of the things I'm working on. One tool that has proven to be invaluable with this hobby is a 3D printer. If you're into model trains, do yourself a favor and pick one up.

very impressive Ryan!!

Never really got into model RR but have always had a fascination with full scale trains. I live less than 1/4 mile from a busy BSF track and hear 2-3 pass every day. Some around here dislike the noise but I enjoy listening, picking out the sound of the locomotive(s) from the rest of the cars as they pass always wondering where it came from, where's it going? Most are just box/flat and hopper cars but have also seen a couple with nothing but US Army armor on them. (I can see Ft Hood from my back yard.) This little ice storm has evidently put a temporary end to that I assume. Haven't heard or seen one pass in 3 days now.
