187 years ago today, it began.

The siege of the Alamo (February 23 – March 6, 1836) was the first thirteen days of the Battle of the Alamo. On February 23, Mexican troops under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna entered San Antonio de Bexar, Texas, and surrounded the Alamo Mission.

One hundred and eighty five
Holding back five thousand
Five days, six days, eight days, ten
Travis held and held again
Then he sent for replacements
For his wounded and lame
But the troops that were coming
Never came, never came, never came...

78 years ago today, well, this globally instantly recognizable the picture speaks for itself:
The raising of that flag on Suribachi means a Marine Corps for the next 500 years." (James Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy, 23 February 1945.) "Among the men who fought on Iwo Jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue."

Thanks for the reminder. That picture always makes me think of Ira Hayes and the Johnny Cash song.

Can't tell you how many times I listened to that song on a 45 as a young teenager. It had a profound influence on me and definitely figured in to my enlisting in the Marines in 1969. (side 2 was "Bad News".)

Personally, I can never forget nor forgive what the Taliban did to hijack that moment. I'd be interested to hear what actual Marines think about it.

Makes me sad that so many folks under 30 have no idea what that image is connected to.

Do you mean the pic of the firemen hoisting the flag?

One thing I have noticed, after discussing this with other parents - they show videos about certain topics in school, but not others. Watching a video engages the audience. lecturing about dates and battles and such is BORING. Not that you want the kids to get 'excited" about war, but just reading about is very distancing (especially for this visually-focused generation) They won't show a movie with guns in it but will show many with other topics...

That kind of s*** don't bother me.
Consider who they are, but imitation (as hokey and meaningless as it was) is still the greatest form of flattery..
