The Northern Lights are pretty cool. I was very fortunate to witness them in person, once in my life, right here in Vancouver. Highly unusual for them to be seen here. It was quite magical.

I live in the Chicago area so I have only seen the Northern Lights once and it was not nearly as spectacular as that. For me, the NL appeared as a number of wavy bands in blue & white high in the sky above our house but I would have just about killed to have a display like the one you experienced.

I have seen the NL from sea, I don't remember exactly where but North of Japan.
