Today is National Vietnam Veteran's day.
I've been privileged to so far, be among the last living 1/3 of the 2.7 million Americans who served there.[This message has been edited by maryjane (edited 03-29-2023).]

I knew. I forgot to put thank you in the flying car thread. Recently, March 23rd, it was announced that the 23rd was the 50 anniversary of the end of the Viet-Nam war.
Caring, I searched for some celebratory activities. It seems as if there is some confusion on the exact anniversary. The Paris Peace Accord was signed January 27, 1973. The fall of South Vietnam Fall of Saigon on March 29, 1973, the last U.S. military unit left Vietnam. By that time the communists and South Vietnamese were already engaged in what journalists labeled the "postwar war."
Other articles mentioned the end of April. I was too young to serve.
Our troops, heros, went through hell and got treated like zhit when they returned to the US. Again, Viet-Nam vets went through hell.
Don, enjoy your day and thank you for serving.

I had no idea this was a day, but I'm glad it is. I've seen no mention of it at all on the news, or in my inbox, unfortunately. Glad you came back, glad you stood for what's right. I know it didn't work out, but like you yourself told me... if not us, then who? Thank you.

Let me jump in and say "thank you", as well. I was a bit young for the "festivities", so I missed out. (Registration for the draft was done away with, ~two weeks before my 18th birthday, by President Jimmuh.) I knew one or two people who had served. Probably more, but I suspect they didn't talk about it. My cousin was also there. Came back relatively unscathed - physically, at least. But boy did he have an attitude. Can't say I blame him. It is what it is.

Now I know, about the national day.
I remember that Ted Koppel (and this was a long time ago, now) said that even though the U.S. efforts in Vietnam have come to be regarded, by so many, as a failure, or as a mistake from the "get-go", that it had the effect of blunting Communist aggressiveness and sparing the nations of Thailand and some of the other nations in or proximate to Southeast Asia from having to defend against full-blown Communist insurgencies. I don't remember the other nations that he referenced.
Anybody like Ted Koppel..? I saw him in person once. He was giving a presentation from a lectern, and I was in the audience. It must have been at Stanford University. Beyond that, the details seem... not pertinent.

Thank you for your service. We all know that we lost that conflict from the living rooms of America.
But it wasn't in vain.

I just never figured on living long enough to be part of 'the old breed' Marines. A vicious attack on the USA and 3 wars have taken place since I left a combat zone. Not sure how I feel about it or myself in that aspect. I can remember when the old guard was made up of WW1 veterans, then (and now) ww2 vets. (The last US WW1 vet died in 2011 at over 110 years old) There are no known WW1 vets still alive.
Of the 16 million Americans that served in WW2, there are about 87,000 ww2 vets left alive in the USA today but in the next 13 years (2036) that is projected (by Dept of Veterans Affairs) to drop to only about 300. The last of The Greatest Generation.[This message has been edited by maryjane (edited 03-30-2023).]
