guess they were collecting the cow gas methane to get that kind of explosion

we had sewer gas reclaiming that fed the big diesel pumps from the big tanks

Vents, or better still, collection and storage.
18K cows farting continuously = a massive fart atmosphere, under a roof.
' How much fart are we talking about here, Norman ? '
' Enough to blow the roof off the building ! '
Unaware that the captured animals were plotting their exit, ' We want to be free ! '
' Release the cows ! ' the protesters were heard ranting.
Things are getting ridiculous.

Most Powerful
Harvesting the natural byproducts of cows, for energy cost reduction.
that's a plan.
Quite mad, you see.

It's still under investigation but most of the methane is suspected of coming from decaying manure which was in a collection pit adjacent to the the barn. This was a very large and modern (complicated) dairy operation...not just a big herd of cows milling around fartin and belching.
Keep in mind, that a cow will poop out almost as much sh** out it's rearend every day as it will take in thru it's mouth and that feed regimen will usually exceed 30lbs of dry matter equivalent every day. (for an adult cow, 30 lbs of dry matter is the accepted minimum required feed just to maintain it's body condition..for milkers, more daily nutrients are required but 30lbs intake is the generally accepted minimum)
Let's say the back end expelled 25lbs/cow/day
X 18,000=450,000 lbs of poop/day.
That decaying mass is going to produce a heck of a lot of methane.

That barn, was 50 acres under roof..

OK- two things...First off; Free steaks (Pre-cooked) for everyone!

Second, my father grew up on a dairy farm in WA....I loved the outdoors and figured growing up on a farm and being outside all the time would be great. We were visiting my great uncle Oscar when I was 6 and he took us with him to pick up some cows...My father and I were sitting in the truck- Uncle Oscar talking to man- the man then grabs a big wooden board/handle thingy and starts pushing the "Mud" out of the way (which was a foot deep).

After a few minutes I fully realized what that "Mud" was....I turned to my father and said, "Dad- you know how I told you it would be great growing up on a farm? I was wrong!"

My father didn't quite bust out laughing- but it was close.
