Short wave radio picking up 7 mhz signals (Page 1/1)
gregr75 JUL 11, 07:54 PM
Just picked up a short wave radio and was fiddling around. And found some thing that sounds like Morse code and regular signals around the 7 mhz band. It's been going morning and night today. i stood 20 feet away from my house even turned the power off just to make sure it's not coming from my house.

Anyone knows what operates around this frequency? Utilities?

40 meters is apparently popular for QRP CW.

7.030 MHz?

Yep…That's exactly it. I did a little more research and even talked to some ham radio friends. its CW - continuous wave om the 40m band. Pretty cool… I wonder what the heck they are saying And where they're coming from. Could be from pretty far away, being 40 m.

edit: theres software to run the signal thru your computer sound card to decode it, cool!

I used to be fascinated by "numbers stations".
They were in various places on the bands.
They may have been a "cold war" thing, sending encrypted messages. But apparently they still exist.

I still love DX'ing shortwave. Up at our lake house in NE PA, I have (because I like old tube things) a Hallicrafters SX-43 ( https://people.ohio.edu/postr/bapix/SX43.htm ) with a 200ft antenna. Sometimes at night, I'll go down to the basement and mess around with the shortwave bands. I'm sure I've heard the 7MHz signal before but will check it out this weekend.
