Next garage project? . . . . genetic engineering (Page 1/1)

In case you have not heard, scientist have discovered a protein that makes genetic splicing very simple. Previously uncurable genetic diseases can now be eliminated by just replacing the defective part of the gene sequence. The process is called CRISPER-Cas9, and it won the Nobel Prize in 2020.

But the problem is that this process is so simple that people can do it at home in their own kitchen. Since it is not a drug, the FDA can not regulate it. Former NASA scientist, Jo Zayner, started a mail order business called The Odin that sent people instructions and materials to do genetic engineering at home. People started making glow in the dark mice and stuff.

It is crazy, crazy **** and I recommend the short Netflix series "Unnatrural Selection". I think it gives a very balanced presentation of both sides of the argument. Zayner had a huge problem with medical corporations charging millions of dollars to cure genetic defects. he felt it was only fair that the common man be allowed access to all this technology. But on the other hand people can literally create monsters in their garage and if they get lose they can will on their genetic changes to their offspring. There could be devastating consequences to the environment.

This is one of those very interesting intersections of science and politics. Thoughts?

THIS type of stuff is what we were hoping the "MAKE Movement" would conjure up - garage biolabs with "questionable" projects being performed... Dodos running feral in your neighborhoods. Prototype Fieros going "Full Production". Flying Iguanas.

A non-specific "blobby thing" slowly making its way down your boulevard.

Random gurgles and slorps and other such wonderful slurpiness.

xoxo

As long as another Steve McQueen is cooked up, we're fine!

Been a looonnngggg time since I performed any "questionable" projects in a garage biolab !!!!!

Thankfully, no blobs were created. And the Mopar seats survived just fine too.

Deep inside the air conditioned garage, a
dna exchange inadvertently occurred, with an insect, living in the deep folds of luxury of the Cordoba's plush upholstery.

Modifications...

' Peter, come in from the garage, your dinner is getting cold ! '
Marge didn't recognize Peter anymore, he had become a mutant, half man, half centipede.
