Does anybody know of a good program for photos...free would be nice but paid is OK too.
ALL I want/need it to do is remove background, sharpen, add text, and crop to a variety of shapes.
I DO NOT want online. I do NOT want monthly subscriptions, I do NOT want to log in to an account to use it and i want it SIMPLE to use and I need it to run on W10. ....plain, simple 2003-WINXP-style open-the damn-program and use it.
Basically, open the pic, modify, transfer over to lightburn and go. No swapping devices or up/download or any crap. dead simple.
I've seriously been thru 3 days of frustration trying to find something like that. I must have downloaded and tried 50 by now.
Any suggestions ?

Simply Gimp You may want to upload an earlier version to suit the computer graphics hardware your older computer uses. Biggest bang you can get on the planet. ' I use it daily ! '

Been trying Gimp for 2 hours and it's still not doing what I want...
OK, picture this.
Place a carboard shape on a table. (say a square or oval).
lay a single picture, maybe 2 and a few text blocks on top of it to fit within the right size/shape. Take a pair of scissors and trim the pics or text block if needed.
slide out the original cut-out.
Layout done.
Thats it.
There are a few I've found (like Fotor) that will do it very easily but they are all on-line and/or subscription-based and I wont BE online the places I need to do it. Something very-very simple that gets simple results in a couple of minutes. On a laptop, not a phone or tablet.
I've even tried ChatGTP for suggestions and it brings up the usual complicated stuff. There has got to be SOMETHING along those lines that came with cameras 5-10-15 years ago[This message has been edited by MidEngineManiac (edited 08-11-2023).]

I will agree with Jake and Valk9. GIMP can't be beat unless you want to pay more than many of us paid for our Fieros.
Give us a little more detail and we can walk you through it.

That is easy.
Open the shape
open the pic of Merlin in a new window. Edit > Copy
Go back to the shape and create a new layer: Layer > New Layer > choose Transparency (near the bottom of the pop-up)
Paste Merlin into the transparent layer. You can move him and scale him.
In the toolbox, find the Text tool. It looks like a capitol "A" Go to tool options and choose a font, color, etc
Create another transparent layer draw a text box and type your text. You can move the text around after you get what you want.
When you have what you want, File > Export as
You are now an artist, just like Hunter Biden!

A friend sent me a pic of her chihuahua and I put him on approach to Sky Harbor.

I use Paint on my laptop to modify pics and also to do artwork including cartoons...But, it takes time and patience;
My new (in 2019) dog was rolling on the floor with her antler chew and I snapped a pic...Later, my GF was having a BD back in Michigan so I made a pic where it appeared that my dog was busting out of a cake....(My GF loved it)
