Crew of 30-foot inflatable catamaran rescued after swarming sharks tried to eat it (Page 1/1)

The first media reports did not describe the sharks.

Summoning my memory of the Discovery Channel's "Shark Week" programming over the years, I was thinking it was likely a swarm of Oceanic Whitetip sharks, which are considered the main culprits in the notorious World War Two episode of the USS Indianapolis.

It was a 30-foot long catamaran with inflatable floats that was attacked in the Coral Sea, to the north and west of Australia.

cookie cutter sharks

odd mini 2 foot cridders that like to bite soft stuff

nuke subs had to armor cables and other bite-able bits

not people eaters

like a remora

I read that wrong. It would have been more interesting as a 30ft inflatable Cartman.

Back in 1979-80, I was stationed on the USS Coral Sea during the Iran Crisis....We were in the Sea of Arabia and the USS Nimitz put on an Airshow for us...An F-14 did a high-g turn just off the angle deck and then a vertical climb out....There was approx' 1500-2000 sailors on the angle deck watching- after the F-14 departed we all (Basically) looked down in the water- I think most of them thought what I did- that we were seeing a LOG floating in the bow wake...Someone called out "Hammerhead!" and suddenly we saw it was a 20+ foot-long hammerhead shark....and, in unison, we all took a step back from the edge- and then we all looked at each other and burst into (Sheepish) laughter.
