Car insurance/ playing a game? (Page 1/2)
Kitskaboodle OCT 23, 09:53 PM
Hi all…..
I am curious if you car insurance carrier is playing this “game” with you:
They send you an email, text, letter, etc. telling you your premium increased “due to annual mileage changed from 1900 to 7200 miles
annually”. (at least in the case of my Reatta)
As an fyi they sent me the same message two months back about my 86 GT stating my annual mileage increased from 100 to 7300 miles. In both cases, my agent did say after this that to please send a current photo of my speedometer if this is not correct.
On a different note, I have told my agent several times that I don’t drive either Fiero or my Reatta over 200 miles a year. I could tell he didn’t care and kept insisting on a pic.

What bothers me is A) that I have to send pics of my speedometer to prove” that his companies mileage increase calculations are WAY OFF base and B) it’s HIGHLY unlikely that any drivers mileage would go from 1900 to 7200 or 100 to 7300 miles in one year! Their increased amount is wildly optimistic.

So, has this happened to any of you?

No, and I never heard of it happening either, but being here in the wide open part of Texas, I would have a LOT of problems driving even a classic or antique car less than several thousand miles a year.

(on a separate insurance topic, I'm having heck getting signed in to even get a quote from USAA. Whoever the azhat was that thought it a good idea to close all their physical offices nationwide (except 2) must be a special kind of moron.)

Kit, who do you use for your insurance?

Not sure if this is what you're already using... but I used classic car insurance for my "classics." The only thing that's required is that I take pictures originally, and came to an agreed-upon value. I also have to have full normal coverage (liability) for myself and every driver in the house. BUT... my classic cars are on a totally different insurance... which means that I do NOT have to have them on the other insurance. For comparison, I pay about $180 for the full year for one car... and it's covered at an $8,900 value.

So, all jokes aside, my "classic car" is a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria LX, which was my grandfather's car. It sits in the garage under a car cover, and... like you, I've not even driven it 100 miles this year.

I have some other cars, but they're in storage so I don't have them currently registered or insured. But both your Fiero and Reatta (love that car by the way, would love to see pictures of it) would totally be able to use them.

Grundy is a bit... how can I say, great company... but they aren't really interested unless you've got something really expensive. American Collectors Insurance is who I use. Grundy didn't want to insure me because they said my Crown Vic wasn't fancy enough, hahah... but American Collectors Insurance said it was no problem...

Here’s a pic of my Reatta. (since you asked for it)
Taken at a local car show about a month ago.

Yeah, I've always liked these cars... I always thought they were so unique, and really quite rare. You almost never see them anymore, but I remember seeing a few in the junkyard like 15+ years ago, and it always killed me because I knew they'd be very uncommon.

Is yours one of the ones with the Hercules Monochrome touch screen monitor? I always thought that was such an awesome feature.

I know it has the 3800 Series 1 motor in it... have you ever considered swapping in the factory supercharger that was made available on some of the other cars with the 3800/Series1?

Any pictures of the inside?

The other car I've been relatively fond of is the Cadillac Allante.

I went to a ritzy Catholic private school in Southern Virginia (St. Christopher's) back in the 1980s... and one of the kids parents donated a BRAND NEW Cadillac Allante that his dealership had just gotten... I think the year was like 1987. Anyway, he donated it to the "Fall Festival" which is where the whole school (which was elementary through high school) had a large festival with games, orchestra and band concerts, and a play, and some rides and other things.

Anyway... this dealership donated the car... SO THAT PEOPLE COULD DESTROY IT. You could pay $20 dollars and have 60 seconds of time with the car with a baseball bat (you'd wear eye protection and a helmet and gloves). Kids, parents, you name it... were beating the **** out of the car... I mean, it was completely destroyed. I wanted nothing to do with it, but was shocked that people were enjoying the destruction of this cool red sports car. There had to be more to it, because you'd have to have over 100 people donate 20 bucks to even break even... and even then, the last 50 people or so aren't going to have much to destroy (if that was their thing). But damn... it killed me. The money supposedly went to charity.

Maybe the car was an insurance write-off or something from the dealer (like it had been damaged or something...)

AAA insurance does that. They wont renew without a current mileage picture.
My girlfriend has insurance with them.

My insurance reduced my premiums because I don't drive my car and the lock down.
They have never asked but its sent to them every 2 years so they know.

My Reatta is a 90. Last two years Buick omitted the touch screen due to crt controller failures. Cool? Ya, until the controller fails and you can’t even turn the radio or even heater. ☹️

Howdy Kit,
No, it has not happened to me either. If this topic is any indication, it's only happened twice. Both live in Kalifornia.

I know we have a very large USAA headquarters facility (collage campus size). It must have 200 physical offices, .

Don, some women play small ball and cut coupons to save money. Cindi plays large ball and haggles with providers. Phone, internet, cable, credit balances, mortgage rates. Playing them like we will buy from someone else.

Remember the old Bell Telephone land line advertising phrase ? "Reach out and touch someone". Cindi recently switched us to USAA and went old school. She advised it is not the least expensive. We believe you get what you pay for.

Cindi called 210 531 8722 for a quote and to sign up for insurance. The same number gets you roadside assistance, and more.

I had someone beside Grundy. I seem to remember them (Grundy) being uppity too

Todd .my math is 20x100=$2000. Were they cheap like that?

I was reading Trump's book the other day, a story in and of itself. He mentioned Cadillac giving him a brand new Allante back then.

Does a 2001 qualify as classic? I thought it was raised to 25 years?

I recall them wanting mileage. I never was required to prove it, that I can think. I'll never think of the company. It seems like McGuire's, but that's wax.

Some I-co's may want Speedo report when have "low mile" discounts.
Simple picture of dash may work.

Others don't care, more so w/ multi car owners &or people have very short commute to work/school.

I have this on Both cars because never drive > ~ 7500 miles per years. For Fiero 10+ years. & they never bother me. Many I-co's "Standard" rates expect 10,000 or more per year.
Plus in this state, Inspection requires Odo reading so can use copy of Registration as proof of Driving if needed or if I-co doesn't have access to State Car Records.
