AD&D Novels ... going down a rabbit hole... (Page 1/1)

So, something that's been a recent "obsession" of mine... that I don't really have anyone to share it with, because it's so incredibly nerdy. But since all of you are here, and are somewhat a captive audience... I'm going to punish you with my interests.

Anyone here ever read the old Advanced Dungeons & Dragons novels? Specifically, the Dragon Lance and Forgotten Realms ones?

I read a bunch of these as a kid when I was 12. They are written to the adult level, so they aren't meant for kids, and a lot of man-children read them as well during the time. They were really popular during the mid 1980s through the mid 1990s, but have recently begun a slight resurgence and they've started to go up in value on eBay. I assume this has to do with the growth in popularity of D&D from the movie and things like Stranger Things targeting kids with it.

Never the less, I kept most of my old books, and I've started trying to read them in order. I have a couple of more on order from eBay, but realized that there's almost 1,000 of them, so it would take an eternity to get through these when I can only find time to read one a month. But just curious... anyone else reading these?

This is what I have thus far... and I don't plan to get too many more, but to round out certain series that flow in the story line...

These are just the DragonLance ones...

I'm reading Pool of Radiance, which is a book in a 4-part series that includes Pools of Darkness, Pools of Twilight, and something else (I forget). But those are Forgotten Realms.

No.

Reality is much more interesting.

How many times has it been reported that "You just can't make this stuff up."?

Only read a few of the Drizzt books.

Hey man...while you are down here in the Forgotten Realms rabbit tunnel, see how it branches out into a Scifi/Cyberpunk area? No? Here...

Look! it's Ed Greenwood.

Ed Greenwood is a prolific author, world-builder, and creator of the Forgotten Realms. He has written several dozen short stories, well over a dozen novels, and contributed to over a score of sourcebooks set in the immensely-popular Dungeons & Dragons campaign setting.

I wanted the Realms to be not a nice place, not a safe place, but I wanted it to be a place I wouldn't mind exploring and spending time in. As in nicer than the real world when you're a lonely nerdy kid, which I was.

— Ed Greenwood on creating the Realms.
Ed also contributed several stories in "Foreshadows:The Ghosts of Zero" back in 2012. (19-story anthology of dark science fiction paired with a 19-track album of original soundtrack songs and instrumentals. In the dystopia of "Foreshadows," multinational corporations vie for power on the world stage, individuals take extreme measures to find answers, and a mysterious creature called the Geist lurks between both groups, pursuing an unknown mission.)

I made a custom mini for their tabletop game. at the end of that short video... Ed did something kinda gross with the mini...

Anyway, the book is interesting, All of the stories are "good", there are 4-5 really good ones...especially the 'Geist' ones... one of the main characters is a future incarnation of "TheDigitalAlchemist", about 100 years after I croak.

Lots of the music is also good.

Anyway, you can wiggle back up onto the main tunnel of the rabbit hole now, I'm just gonna sit here, it's nice and quiet and dark.

"Is it the 'future' yet'?

Haha... No... the corrupt councilman of Phlan is taking money under the table from the evil Thranxaxas, and has subverted the other council members, thereby making himself the most powerful politician in Phlan. Unbenknownst to him though, the party of a Cleric, Thief, and Mage, all know his schtick, and they're going to overthrow him (I think... it's been like 3 decades since I last read it). But I'm in the last two chapters...

Apparently, their success didn't last long though, as there are 3 other books in the series... but I haven't read those yet.

Ugh, I know... the Drizzt books... I have some of those games too... odd that they're both in DragonLance and Forgotten Realms... but I've almost intentionally tried to stay away from those books. Not because I think they're bad, but it's kind of like ... I don't have to get involved if I never get into it in the first place. I hear the R.A. Salvatore books are all really good... but knowing that I have to go through ~40 Margaret Weiss / Tracy Hickman books under the Dragon Lance series... I just don't see when I'll ever get the time to read the Drizzt ones. I hear they're really good though...

CyberPunk stuff is pretty cool... I don't much have time to play games... whether it's computer games, or D&D. It's just that with everything going on... I have so little time. Speaking of... have to go pick up my daughter.

Speaking of cyberpunk...(ok, actually cypherpunk) ...did you read that a Seattle USA lab has successfully cracked an iron key?
(you may need a Wired account to read it all)

I'm trying to think about how they hacked it... I think the "easy" part is actually breaking the cipher... I assume they just brute forced it with enough processing power. But getting past the 10-tries, my opinion is that that they probably bypassed the encryption/decryption chip and firmware loader... and then accessed the EMMC directly. Obviously, the data on it was encrypted, but I think they did that offline on something else. But who knows...

I have Crypto... I bought $1,200 of it back in 2001. It's now worth $671. Hahah...
