OTA Update Bricks Ford Mach-E (Page 1/2)
Doug85GT DEC 27, 03:30 PM
This guy tried to update his Ford Mach-E. It bricked his car. He had to get it towed in so that someone with a laptop could spend two hours to fix it for him.

I will never buy a vehicle that has Over-The-Air updates. It is bad enough that most software makers release half baked code and rely on updates and patches to fix it after release. I do not want a stupid software update to have this kind of real world consequence.

They should brick the entire line and not fix it. The fact that they had the balls to call that a Mustang is complete stupidity.

Everyone: "Tesla did it, so it must be easy."

Also everyone: Assigns their C-Tier teams to develop EV's, and fail spectacularly.

The Mach E like most compliance EV's is a complete joke, check out the tear down, especially the Rube Goldberg cooling system.

Used to be a "joke" if cars were PC running Windows....
Big problem is now many vehicles, OTA Update or otherwise, are Worse then PC.

Many "recalls" are "software fixes" whether or not is a program problem like Kia/Hyundai w/ crap engines failures & related lawsuits. "Recall" remaps knock sensor to look for bad crank & rod bearings etc to save Car Maker $ & don''t have to replace many more engines. Even when owners get the PCM Patch, they still claim void the warranty & won't replace because of many other reasons. "Recall" requires going to Dealers on most cars because Doesn't have OTA Update.
Toyota "Drive by Wire" w/ crap gas pedal assembly but blame owners.

& like Windows & many more.... Car Makers have or will soon force owners to go to Arbitration to End most to all Lawsuits.

I agree; Back in the 70s the best selling car was the Olds Cutlass....in the 80s Olds management got the bright idea that it was just the NAME that sold the cars, so they named almost every car they sold "cutlass"....Cutlass Calais, Cutlass Ciera, Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass Cruiser.....This diluted the name and helped destroy Oldsmobile.

If I was going to use an old name for a Ford vehicle, I might have used "Thunderbird"....

I get a notice on my f150's display about once every 4 days that an 'update' is available and something like 'some options may not work right' if I don't connect to a wifi..blah blah bllah. Would you like to connect now?" I always chose the 'no' option.

Obviously I don't get out enough, had to use the "Urban Dictionary" to learn what a brick was.
Here all this time I've been confused...........

Another lesson learned.

OTA Updates may want WiFi for some model lines...
Many can use any Cell Phones connected to them to update anything. IOW Will use Your Cell Data & "eat" monthly data that can cause bigger Cell Bills.
Others like Tesla, GM OnStar, & growing number of model lines have their own cell service that "Phone Home" often like every few minutes to hours even when you don't use i-net/cell data for maps etc.

Term is mainly a "holdover" from IT world for any software problem making hardware useless after installing.
Example: Many have "Bricked" a Icrap thing trying to "root" or otherwise unlock it. Iphone, Ipod, Android phones, many tablets of all kinds, etc.

Many have problems w/ Windows Updates too even Enterprise Level of Servers running Exchange, SQL Server, & more costing 100 Thousands to Millions of $ for every Seconds of Down Time.

IOW The "Joke" was if your car had same problems as PC after MS Updates you be suing the Car Makers & scream to NHTSA FTC & more for costing you to killing people.

Now many & soon all will be worse then a PC because runs all kinds of crap software that breaks or total bricks them But Tesla & others are Forcing Arbitration same as MS Adobe & most other software brands for 10 to 20 years now.

Which is why I'm not likely to buy a new car. Ever.
Our two newest are 2019, and those are already enough trouble. Even my wife wants something that doesn't include all the "nanny-ware".

Only will get worse as Feds pushes more crap like requiring remote kill switch on every vehicle. Is bad enough OnStar started w/ that crap but just buy a GM car w/o OnStar was easy.

sheeple bought OnStar was only use by owner auth for stopping a stolen car but not true & feds & more hack OnStar to track, bug, or stop the car w/o notice or OnStar "approval."
And while most older OnStar & related are "dead" because ATT et al dropped analog & early digital cell service, Many can re-activate old service in a limited area using "stingray" type equipment. Same will happen w/ cars run 3G or LTE data as cariers plan to kill that services soon.
