Going to see the giant redwoods in norther California in June. Anyone done that trip have any suggestions?
First day will be seeing Crater lake in Orgon and driving down to North California around Crescent City.
Second day will be driving down around Eureka.
Third day will be driving down to San Francisco.
Then we head back east toward Nevada.
Any stops along the coast that we should not miss?
Recommendation for a good seafood place in San Francisco?[This message has been edited by BingB (edited 05-28-2024).]

On your way down to SF, you can stop at confusion hill since it is along the route from Eureka. http://www.confusionhill.com/attractions
Also, not to be rude but are you sure you want to visit SF? It's nothing like it used to be due to the crime. Tourists leave all their windows rolled down and some even leave their hatchback wide open so criminals don't break their windows for nothing. Since it's 20 minutes from Oakland which is the toilet city of this state, the ghetto dwellers have no issue driving to SF to rob people and do smash and grabs. But if you don't care about all that, any of the restaurants or walk-through stands in SF have some of the most amazing seafood especially along the Embarcadero and Pier 39. And while you're on the piers, you can go over to pier 33 and take a ferry out to Alcatraz. Just a couple suggestions.
I've lived in the Bay Area for 53 years so I know a lot of the travel spots, but just keep in mind, things are a lot higher priced out here.

Crater Lake; 2 things, 1) If you have time do the boat tour on the lake- the water is unbelievably clear and BLUE.....When the boat is moving the white wake on top of the BLUE water is incredible.
2) When at the look-out along the rim south side by the lodge, look to the northwest along the rim- Llao rock is the dark area...When Crater lake was formed 6000 years ago, the volcano's top vent had clogged, so pressure built up until the sides cracked and then gas- and lava- vented out around the sides...after it had all been expelled the mountain collapsed forming the crater which then, over thousands of years, filled due to snow melt.
Llao Rock is where one of these vents were located- the vent was cone-shaped, then lava began to well up- filling the cone and then pouring out on the side of the mountain- when it collapsed, it cut this lava flow in half- so you can see the whole vent shape...

Thanks for the replies.
I have been to Crater Lake before, but I won't be hiking to the rim this time. My daughter was there last year, but my son has never been.
I know there are lots of good restaurants in San Francisco. I was hoping for some specific examples. Good seafood, but not crazy 5-star prices.
I have added a day to our stay in San Francisco because my son wants to see the Winchester mansion in San Jose. Anyone been there?
How about any little spots along the coastal drive on 1 or 101?

i live in the area. sf is just not safe anymore. if you do alcatraz make sure you do angel island as well a lot of people miss that. scoma's on the warf in sf is great. there is a great brewery and food in eureka the lost coast brewing company. I really like the great white beer and the hot wing chicken salad. winchester is cool but very odd at the same time. expect to spend a full day there because of parking and lines. if you want to do something more woodsy rather than go to winchester do muir woods. I liked that and the hike down to stinsin beach. there are good restraunts down there with great soups and food. [This message has been edited by mmeyer86gt/gtp (edited 06-04-2024).]
