Anyone (still) into gaming? (Page 1/2)
Cliff Pennock OCT 18, 12:53 PM
I am of course talking about computer/console games. 😁

My first "console" was a Pong console. I think it was back in 1979 or so. Then somewhere in the 80s, I got an Atari 2600. I actually brought it from the States since it wasn't available in The Netherlands yet (and wouldn't be available for a long time still). At the time I knew nothing about NTSC vs PAL; that the tv system in the States was incompatible with that in Europe. So all I got was a black & white image without sound. When the Atari 2600 came out in The Netherlands, they had a competition at a computer exhibition. It was Atari Circus and whoever had the high score at the end of the exhibition, would win a PAL Atari 2600. My first try was actually so bad, they felt sorry for me and let me try it one more time. That second try went a lot better and a week later when the exhibition ended, I had the high score so I won the 2600. 😊

That was actually the last time I would own a game console until the Nintendo Switch.

Anyway, I've since been a PC Gamer. I played Doom Multiplayer (yes, the original Doom), Quake, Duke Nukem, The Heretic, Descent, Tribes, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Tribes 2, Dark Forces - all the classics. 😄 Then I got hooked on the Battlefield series. I played them all up until (I think) Battlefield 5.

Then for years, I didn't play any games because all my friends thought themselves to be too grown up to play games. And multiplayer gaming isn't any fun without friends. But then I got kids. And especially the youngest (he's 13 now) loves gaming. So I play a lot of Fortnite now with my kid but also with friends (I have a lot of younger friends).

So do you (still) game? If so, which games do you play?

Not as much as I used to, these days mostly Forza Horizon 5 and Gran Turismo 7. If you want a REAL mind-blowing experience, check out Half Life Alyx for the Valve Index.

I am DEFINITELY STILL "into gaming," I just can never seem to sit down long enough to actually play. I grew up with all the same games you did... loved my 2600. But I kind of stopped playing games around ~2005 I'd say, but have just recently started picking it up. One of my colleagues at work bought me the Deluxe Edition of Baulders Gate 3, and I've been playing that, though I haven't gotten that far in it yet.

I'm 19 and surprisingly don't play (m)any video games, the only things I play are BeamNG drive, and Microsoft flight simulator. I will say, on BeamNG drive, they have a downloadable Fiero model, and it drives surprisingly like the real thing, it's a weird feeling to connect my actual car to a few moving pixels, but it just feels similar, damage model is really good to, even to the point that everything is modeled out and behaves like it should, including in a crash.

I have a Minecraft server I host for my son, nephews, and a few of our friends, and my son and I both like beat 'em ups. Both Streets of Rage 4 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredders Revenge were fantastic on Switch.
I'll second Baulder's Gate 3. That is as close to sitting with friends to play DnD as exists outside of actually doing just that. It's incredible the depth of what's possible in that game.

Pong, Atari 2600, played Colecovision and a few others, Commodore 64. PC Classic games -->Doom Multiplayer (yes, the original Doom), Quake, Duke Nukem, HexenHeretic, Descent, Unreal Tournament, Dark Forces, some of the x-wing and tiefighter games.

Halo 1-3. X Box and Playstation3.

I really don't play much anymore, but have been *casually* working on a game for the past few years - "No Dig Bill".

If you are looking for a casual 2 hour game, try "Journey". Its beautiful to look at, and the soundtrack is great.

That was an awesome video! Are you "TheCrafsMan"? Or are you just trying to make his game reality?

I just finished my own VR Escape Room type game "The Chess Master". The goal is to try to escape from a house (and in the process, try to find a code for a vault).

I play everything from the old Atari 2600 all the way to current gaming systems, mainly because of my 2 sons. However I do miss the online flash games more than anything so if anyone wants to have an incredible time, Flashpoint is a website that was proactive when they talked about discontinuing Adobe Flashplayer and encouraged people to copy and upload their favorite online flash games to their server. Now they've compiled all of the games for a 1.6tb download. It took me almost a month to download but it is worth it. Thousands of older flash games that are not available online anymore. Websites like NotDoppler, Kongregate, Miniclip, etc.

https://flashpointarchive.org/

And they run on a standalone flash player. I believe it's the Adobe developer player.

We did have an atari growing up but I was more of an arcade kid, it just wasn't the same. Had a WII for a while, got the WII fit games and it was insulting lol. My ex kept it when we split and its probably in some strangers closet.

I have always been a PC gamer. Started on the C64 and had a lot of RPG games. You really had to have an imagination back then. Moved to PC and played Doom then Doom 2 and could not find anyone to play with. My game was way above all of my friends and they didn't want to play. Then we started playing some racing game, not a big fan but it was ok.

Thief was my first stealth game. I still have it but its not the same. Those old CRTs made everything fuzzy and it didn't look so bad. Now the pixels are so sharp its hard to even look at.
As I got older I chased realism and content, more adult games. Still like the slasher games but wanted some story. It probably started me down the road on the first person RPGs.

Spent a lot of time in the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games. Spent a lot of money on a PC and VR 7-8 years ago and it really put a new spin on Skyrim and Fallout 4. The first time I walked up on a bear in VR put it in real perspective what they were going for, and yes it was time to reload from a save. I don't play any VR now, the old head set still works but Facebook purchased them and ****ed it up. Plus it takes too long to get into a VR game when I can just run a regular game on my main monitor and still have another screen open.
Who has time to focus on any one thing anymore.

I still like RPG games and BG3 is fun but it doesn't have the charm that the first BG game had. You really had to use your imagination, that has been replaced by more details in the games.
First time I clicked on an NPC and it told me "don't click me I don't want any trouble" I was hooked on games that didn't take themselves too seriously.
I do enjoy BG3 and the models are nice to look at for the most part. Larin studios has a couple DND based third person games that are fun to play.

One of the games I really got into was Diablo, I remember playing the demo on a 486 that just barely would run it. Been a big fan, then Diablo 2 came out and I played a lot online and was in a few clans. We had a good time.
But Diablo 3 came out and I chased the graphics and moved on from Diablo 2 like most of my clan mates. But Diablo 3 was not the same, it was fun but it was just too grindy and it had a rocky start.
Today Diablo 4 is out and while I spent some time in it, its just not fun anymore.

For the most part I still enjoy playing games, just do not have the time I use to. Working in IT I have several computers and use them for work mostly.
I work from home now so I do have more time, but damn my ass has expanded and it's getting harder to stand up and go see the sun. Just kidding, well kind of.
Covid lock down really expanded my library and my butt.

Think we are going to go walk the beach this afternoon for a while. Not too long, the sun it burns.

Hey, this is really cool... where can we play this? Are you going to put it on GOG or Steam?
