I just bought a Pioneer 350W 10inch subwoofer in a box from one of my friends...and would like to listen to it on my trip ome (I'm 250 some odd miles away) I have an aftermarket CD deck with 2 preouts (JVC KD-SX980) and was wondering if there was any way to hook it up without an amp. Note that I will be getting an amp..but not for another week or so. Please help me out if you could thanks, (I leave on wed. morning) -Ryan------------------ 88 Formula undergoing change to become Mazdaspeed Orange! Would you sit in front of a computer system without a monitor? No. You can hook up one of the speaker outputs, but it will sound very bad... Just load it in the car, drive home without a sub, and when you get the amp, install it properly... No point trying to run it off deck power, you run the risk of killing the sub with distortion.... (Not enough power kills more subwoofers than too much power. Distortion comes from trying to push it at a volume you like without enough oomph behind it... )

Yes you can.I asume by preouts you mean your sterio has jacks on the back of some sort.Just go to your local electronics store and pick up a speaker wireing connector that will plug into your sterio, the other end that goes to your speaker may have to be cut off or I think they sell them with one end cut off......by saying box,I asume it's in an enclosure.Otherwise the sound quality won't be as good if you just set it on the floor. But should sound good enough.

Exactly, listen to what he says. Your sub will not have enough power to do much of anything, and if it does you just run the risk of ruining it. It's better to overpower a sub than underpower it.

Not to mention you'll ruin your deck. Your stero wasn't ment to handle the drain that a sub requires.

oh yeah, plus you'll need a crossover to prevent high freq sounds from running through your sub. Lot's of amps have those built in. Flick a switch and you're set. I have sub controls on my eq that allow me to adjust for the type of music I listen to. ------------------ Rick D 86GT 84COUP http://home.attbi.com/~dslize

Just wait until you get the amp installed without it you wont have enough power for the sub to do anything plus you run the risk of dammaging both the stereo and the sub. ------------------ '85 SE 4 Speed ---------------------- No Cat Holley Scoup Holley Throttle Body

The purpose of the amp is to boost the power to your speakers. Sure you can run a sub off your head unit, but if subs were able to be powered by head units alone who would need to buy an amp? Bottom line is to truely benefit the capabilities of the speaker you need an amp. If you just want to be able to hear music (because you have no speakers at all) you can hear music off the head unit alone.

350W is the max (1 speaker) will handle, befor it will start distorting, this is called a blow speaker whe you hear this at low volume. It doesen mean you have to pump 350W to drive. If you got a 5W sterio and are trying to drive the speaker thats a bit too low of watage to drive such a large speaker.I have used plenty of high power speakers on a stock stero because thats what there designed for.
