I think I did the best though today, all the stuff I got was free  snagged a couple of new heater hoses for my heater core, a new overflow tank cap, new leather covered shift knob from an Olds Silohette, a shift indicator light socket, couple of lighters, new headlight switch (mine is missing the lettering) and anything else that I could stuff in my pockets
The rule for the day was if it will fit in my pockets, it comes with me  lol
Also looked at an 87 belt tensioner and was going to get it, but wasn't sure if it would work on the 88 duke...if I find out it does, back I go to the yard to spend the $5 for it... Looked relatively new...
Edit: forgot to mention, that silver SE that they saw on the way to pick me up was almost mine...Guy wanted 2 grand for it though and it needs new freeze plugs all around...he blew em out and the car overheated.... He also had a red 84 2m4 that I was going to buy before this 88, but he sold it out from under me and refunded me the cash I had on it. And he had/has an 89 G/A with the LT3 (2.0 turbo) up there for 1200...wanted that for a swap, coulda had the 84 and the G/A for 1800...

Lets look at this in a rational, economical sense. Figure the junkyard probably paid the previous owner 75-100 for the car as scrap. Also take into account that they are going to make 5x or more money off of it in used parts, and at the current price of scrap metal, another 75-100 for steel at .60 a pound (rough estimates mind you). That puts them at least around 550-600 for a car they paid no more than 100 for. They are already ahead of the game by 450-500. Now had I gotten more items that were actually worth what they were charging, yes I would have paid the full price for them no problem.
And as for the comment about being left around your car Jimmy, my actions today do not mean that I would take parts off of someone else's running, driving car. A scrap yard is nothing more than a giant garbage dump for cars. If its been thrown away by the previous owner, its fair game. One man's trash is another man's treasure...

I guess I'd rather he use the parts than the people destroying them. I've seen yard employees destroy thousands of dollars of parts in a matter of minutes.

i dont see the big issue this happens at the local pick n pull, in one hand it is theft because certain junkyards around here will prosicute you over something miniscal but at the same time those same junkyards have earned my business because 90% of what i pull the y have just given to me. on the other hand junkyards like u wrench it (ohio) charge there fee to get in and here lately when i have gone in the one or 2 fieros i find are thrashed beyond reason so when i go in looking for a part and its destroyed im a bit upset but im not going to lie ive pocketed ignition modules and dumb stuff. on the subject the only time ive seen prosecution in a junkyard was when a man was pulling parts and was constantly coming in and out of the yard he had an estimate of 200 of parts and yes i beleive he did serve 120 days or something but i rarely doubt there going to send you away over a fuse or cigerette lighter attachment.

I've done it a few times for my motorcycle at the junk yard here.
Here's the thing:
1. This particular motorcycle junkyard has literally THOUSANDS of motorcycles, all sitting outside with no roofing or anything. They are exposed to the elements 24/7; they hang the gas tanks, and I've seen birds living in some. They aren't scrapping them, they are letting them rot.
2. The people that run this particular junkyard think a 30 year old brake rotor costs almost the same as a new one. They think a turn signal cover from a 1970's bike is worth almost $7, and yet they say to take one that is chipped or cracked.
3. What is going to happen to the junk? It's going to sit and rot. I would MUCH rather someone steal something they plan on using on their car than see it crumble to rust in a field.
Case in point, I would say it is better those parts are going to good use.
On the other hand, if the parts he were stealing were off an almost brand new car (mid 2000's) and that part is worth $20 BROKEN, then that is a different story.
Just my two cents------------------

I think it is but thats me. The owner would certainly think it is. Not saying the person you quoted would do this but lets say some stranger came in your yard and liberated some stuff off of your parts car? Would that be theft?
I hope I liberate a couple million from the Florida Lottery this weekend, I think not giving me some kind of return on my investment is theft

Of course it's theft. There can be no question about it. You can justify it if that makes you feel better, but it is still theft. The reasoning that it is such a small amount compared with the profit the yard will make on the rest of the car is nonsense. That means that I can steal a pack of gum from a large department store if I like, since they are making a lot of money on other things. Like I said, justify it any way you want, but it is stealing.

I buy thousands of dollars worth of parts from a couple of yards. Once in a while I go out and get it off myself, like a molding I dont want damaged and yards wont pull off. Whenever I do, i always grab a pocketfull of various light bulbs. They sell them in stores for like $6 a pair. Ya I guess Im stealing them but Ive never heard of anyone going to a yard to buy bulbs so Im figuring theyll never sell them anyway. Call it a perk for me buying litterally tons of parts.

 No doubt about it. Does it matter it was a salvage yard? I'll bet if someone did the same thing to the the guy liberating the parts from the salvage yard except from his own personal shop or garage he'd call it theft.
Just my opinion and I'm pretty sure if the local authorities were involved, they'd agree.
