Yes it does, and it's far easier to do it that way. And when you put it back together, put the breaker bar and socket on the nut (wheel back on), with the breaker bar horizontal, and stand on it. If you weigh 200 pounds, stand one foot out on the breaker bar, and you will exert 200 foot pounds of torque. Stand closer or farther depending on your weight (for example, 1.5 feet out if you weigh 150 pounds). Easy as pie.

I slip a long pipe over the breaker bar as a “torque multiplier”. I also use the donut spare...put it on with a couple of lug nuts, drop the car on the ground and use its weight to help. Do the same for tightening the new nut.
