I just spent most of today screwing with the drivers side door....... Jeez what a pain....... Pontiac/GM in it's infinit wisdom skipped the "normal" installation of hinges and adjustment sloting.

To adjust the front of the door up/down you have to nearly strip the door to its frame. Even then you Must use a flex because there is no room to swing a wrench inside the frame when working on the top hinge. ((what the hell jackass puts the bolt heads inside the door?))

There is NO adjustment in the post for front/rear or "sag". The plates in the column float slightly, but the holes are punched only enough to clear the bolts. So even tho there are a couple mm of float in the plates, you can't move the damn things w/o grinding the posts.

A while back someone e-mailed me about shimming the door...... Guess what. Shimming the thing is about the only way to do it w/o tearing the whole door apart. Who ever it was, I don't have copies that far back, you did the right thing after all. Unless a hinge is bent, or the bushings are gone, that is.

Replacing the bushings will reduce sag allot, if not eliminate it. Adding a nylon washer to the lowwer hinge makes the brass last allot better. Use a good grease when replacing the pin kit. Something thick like wheel bearing grease.

If a hinge is bent.... good luck. There are a few ways to spring it back, but you have to be carefull. Over do it and the door has other problems.

There are days I Really hate these cars........

theogre,

I have spent more hours than I even want to think about trying to adjust the doors on my 86GT. I replaced the hinges but still had sagging, expecially on the drivers side door. As you found out the ONLY thing I could do to reduce sag was th shim the lower hinge. I wish someone could shed some light on this subject.

well. I still have to fool with the door more. I'll probly take the hinges off the post and see what damage I can to with a dremel. All I need is a little bit. At least the door looks better. I got rid of the wrecked mirror and straightened it up some. I really need to replace the door frame, but it will do till I can.
