Is there a slick way to compress the emergency brake return spring (the one that goes over the cable, at each rear caliper)?

Usually, I manage to do it using both hands, but it's kind of a struggle trying to install the spring and cable end into the actuator lever slot at the same time. Last time, I was pretty tired and just couldn't seem to get it.

Finally, I took the spring off, compressed it using a long bolt, a nut and 2 washers. Threaded a couple of plastic "zip ties" through the coils to keep it squashed, and carefully removed the long bolt + hardware. Next, installed the spring over the cable, slipped the cable into the lever, and cut off the zip ties with diagonal cutters.

Worked fine, and was glad to get it done, but its costs 2 zip ties and a fair amount of time. I'm sure there's a better way - what do the pros do?

Hi StuGood,

Hmm, I don't have much of anything new to add since that's what I do too. Except I squeeze it by hand, tighten the tie wrap (zip tie) some, squeeze some more, and tighten again until its fully compressed. I don't use a bolt, washers, nut. Probably faster by hand. Of course you could also just compress in a vise.

Now you've got me wondering if there is an easier way!?!

I just run the cable through the spring and leave it loose. Then I install the spring by hand, and use a pair of needle nose pliars to pull the cable out of the spring and onto the little lever. Doesn't take much time at all.

I like the tie strap idea. By hand is tough.

Two pair of pliers. One slip-joint to grip and push on the spring, and needle nose to pull the cable end. Piece of cake.
