Yep.

Have a 2.8 buick out of a 85 Skylark/Skyhawk (I forget which model) in mine and love it.

a buick 231 is not a 2.8 liter. Not even close. It is a 3.8 liter. And yes it will fit. There are many supercharged 3800 members on this board as well as n/a ones

Be careful. The 3.8L V6 is a RWD engine, while the 3800 V6 is a FWD engine. Both have 231 cubic inches. Ythe 3800 FWD engine will fit. While you could probably get the RWD engine to work, it would take much more custom work and would likely not be worth the effort.

The 231 V6 is a circa-1960 design (originally 225 CID from memory) that GM sold to American Motors in the mid 1960's then repurchased in the mid 1970's and assigned to Buick. The carbureted production versions of the engine only produce about 110HP and 145 ft-lbs torque.
They're not worth it for a Fiero upgrade.

The mid-80's turbo version or any of the fuel-injected derivatives (the 3800s) are a different story.

I had a 78 Sunbird with 231 v-6. It was rated at 105 hp and 150 torque from the factory.

Saw an article about how Smokey Yunick got 290 HP out of one.

Headers and a 390 cfm 4bbl later mine was producing 170 hp at the rear wheels at 5700 rpm. On 89 octane no-lead pump gas.

Admittedly the pre-76 231's had inferior oiling and restricted intake flow on the heads, but Detroit has always detuned engines to increase durability.

And the 231 has NOTHING in common with the old 225. The 225 was based on a cut down 6 hole aluminum version of the 337 Buick block (nailhead v-8 circa 1954) and was designed to "obsolese" at 80,000 to 100,000 miles. It got a "boost" when Olds decided to use it for its Turbo F85 because it was thought the aluminum would dissapate the turbo's added heat quicker!!

The 231 and 225 are the same engine. even the new SII 3800s are the same basic engine but with many important refinements. Buick used the 225 in 62 then sold it to Kaiser (Jeep) in 64. They used it between 65 and 69 when AMC bought them. It was then sold back to GM who used it for a couple of years at 231 cid before changing to an evenfire crank with split journals. Intake manifolds and cams will even interchange on odfire engines (check Holley and Crane). Gm sells a book on V6 performance that talks about this. I have a 69 CJ5 withe a 225 and a 231 with a thrown rod in my garage now and they are interchangeable. It is possible to get a lot of reliable horsepower out of one. A swap shold be easier than a sbc since it will bolt to the transaxle and i believe the starter is on the wrong side. I would agree to go with a SII 3800 since you can get a low mileage one for not much above the cost of a GOOD stock rebuild unless can find one from a GNX or a T type. The Regal T types are easy to get Grand National power from.
