I looked in the archives but couldn't find the answer to this question. Is there any way to test and see if the coolant temperature sensor is operating properly? I have an '84 SE 4 cyl. that's been idling rough and high while it's warming up, and the CTS is the only sensor I haven't replaced. I know it's only $8, but if there's a way to test it it'd save me a trip to AutoZone.
Thanks for any help y'all can give me.

At 100F your sensor should have a resistance of 1400 ohms, and at 260 it should be 55 ohms. Test the sensor with a thermometer. To test the gauge in the cluster just jumper the wire that goes to the sensor with the appropriate resistors (i.e. use resistances above). Hope this helps.

Sorry for the double post but what I wrote before was for the temp gauge and not the sensor. To test the temp sensor (goes to ECM) these are the following resistance values at given temps:

F C OHMS
210 100 185
160 70 450
100 38 1800
70 20 3400
40 4 7500
20 -7 13500
0 -18 25000
-40 -40 100700

Good luck! By the way, are is your car running with a themostat?

Yes, I replaced the thermostat not too long ago. I'll try what you said and see what comes of it. Thanks!

The symptom that you descibed sounds like a vacuum leak to me. If you have a vacuum gauge (or maybe you can borrow one) take a reading and see what you get. GL
