I finally found my hard copy of the VIN sheet for each year.

The reason for confusion when decoding VIN numbers for 1984 GM product is that 1984 product doesn't use the same layout as 85 and up cars.

What this means is that all 1984 Fiero will read 1G2A in positions 1-4.

positions 1-3 are the same as later years.

Position 4 is always A.
A is the restraint system code. "Non passive manual belts"

position 5
E Coupe
F SE
M Sport Coupe

postition 6 & 7 is body type.

position 8 is engine code.
Always R 4 cyl for 1984

postion 9 is the check digit.
The method to calculate the check digit is in the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

position 10 is always E for 1984

the rest is the serial number.
