I've got an '87 coupe that I drive everyday. I've decided to rebuild the entire front (and possibly rear) end rather than junk the car (155K miles). I have everything I need except I want to replace the front and rear coil springs with STOCK height and rate springs.
Nobody seems to carry them. GM doesn't anymore and a few places I've called just shake their head when I say "Fiero". I don't want to put lowered springs from the Fiero Store (the guy actually recommended against it due to ride harshness).
This car always rode like "crap" with a ride thats jarring and rough and not to pleasant. Michigan roads are not forgiving.
I'm used to replacing springs on 4000+ lb full size monster cars (Lincolns and Mercurys), but should I replace these springs or not? The bumper in the control arm seems to have bottomed out frequently enough to warrant replacement.
I can't find any springs though!!! Someone help. I need to get the car running in two weeks or less (substitute car does not like snow and salt).
Or does anyone have a coil-over-shock recommendation to make up the difference?
OK, I did some calling and I found a place that claims they can "make" new springs in about a week. All I need is an OEM part number.
Here's the next problem: The dealer gave me 10 parts numbers for the front springs! He said I need a tag from the springs to get the code. Naturally, there are no tags that i could find left on the springs.
Here's what I got. He said there is an "option label" on the car and on that label is a code either PM37 or PG97. The part numbers increase numerically from 10034093 to 10034102 and the Codes from FHW to FJH (skipping I).
Does anyone out there have an '87 Coupe with AC and a 4 cylinder manual and could they check for a tag on either the front or rear springs? It should be a paper tag of some kind wrapped around the coil spring. I vaguely remember seeing one of these on my Fiero when I did the struts and shocks, but don't remember if I left it on or peeled it off. All I need is the 3 letter F code.
Much thanks!

Sorry, but that answer is incorrect. At least as of Monday, November 19, 2001.
The fiero store was the first place I called for springs. The guy who takes orders (or a technical dude) said "no ah ahh" on the stock spring height thing. They only carry the lowered ones. He also said "nobody carries the stock parts anymore".
Well, he was partially right. I don't have their name and I can dig up the phone number if anyone wants it, but I found a place that makes them to order based on the original specs. They are out in Kansas.
Wish me luck!

I have a pair of factory rear springs with your tag on them. I will sell them both for 40 bucks. They came off a fiero with 63k miles and are mint. I cant seem to find front but I have a set of lowered ones somewhere...Let me know if its too late
That's ok. I'd rather have new springs. The problem with used springs from cars with low mileage is that they still have been stuffed into cars for the last 10+ years and are beginning to suffer from fatigue due to being constantly compressed under the weight of the car. I'm getting new springs made this week, not 15 years ago! Kinda neat.
