what is the equivalent for GM 1052080 sealer? by fee-air-oh

The factory shop manual says "coat cylinder head bolt threads with GM 1052080 sealer or equivalent". My question is what is it? And what is the equivalent?

It's thread sealer and it's equivalent to GM 1052081.

Just kidding, hope someone can answer your question more specifically. Without going through a lot of technical talk, just go to a good auto parts store and ask for a good sealer for cyclinder head bolts. Two functions of the sealers are to prevent seisure of the bolts in the head (just in case a cyc head gasket leaks and rusts it all together) and secondly it acts a little like locktite to prevent bolt from backing out once torqued.

I use the Loctite white thread sealer; doesn't smell pleasant. I Don't remember the part number off the top of my head. Coat the first thread of the bolt only. This sealer is not thread locking compound, but is used to keep coolant from seeping through the threads. If used properly it will insignificantly affect torque readings and provide a good seal.

yep mindscape....exactly what I use! Been using it for years...but have no idea of part #......lol. But it works great....never had it fail.

Is this similar to liquid teflon pipe sealant? Just curious, as it sounds like the same stuff I've used to seal oil/temp sensors and hose threads. White, kind of gooey, smelly, liquid sealant...pretty much fits the bill.

I used the permatex teflon pipe thread sealer on mine when I rebuilt the engine. The sealer is to prevent water from leaking thru the threads. I use the same sealer at work on our plastic molds. It is made to withstand heat and steam pressure.

I got mine at the local GM dealer. They had it in stock, and I needed it right away, but it ain't cheap!!! Hopefully, Fel-Pro or someone else makes an equivalent at a much better price. I'll bet it's basic Teflon pipe thread sealant, but I didn't want to risk it for a few bucks.

If it is indeed Teflon pipe dope, I sell it all the time for $1.49 a tube at work (Ace Hardware)

Fits the bill too, I think this stuff can withstand over 1000psi of steam, air, gas, water, any type of pressure and isn't harmed by most chemicals.

But still, for cylinder head bolts, I would probably be kinda leery of a product only for plumbing, and would probably get the permatex stuff too.
